CD-ROM problem on 5760

Hey guys,

I have a slight issue which isn't actually so slight.

To make the long story short, I was installing MATLAB yesterday. This was the first time I did on this computer but I've done it on a number of different ones, never facing any problems.

Anyhow, the installation errored out on me at 95% which pissed me off, but I didn't think much of it. I restarted the computer and that was that.

When I restarted it to my amazement my CD-ROM wasn't being recognized any more. It's a DVR-K16 DVD/CD combo.

Now the DVD's play perfectly fine, however I can't get the drive to recognize any cds. This being said I can't even reinstall windows now since it doesn't recognize the cd.

Since the DVD's are read I think I can rule out a hardware failure. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Just because DVDs work DOES NOT mean that the Drive doesn't have any problems. Internally, the lens and such are reset to different setings for CD and DVDs. Most of the time when a unit starts to fail it will get picky about varioud DVD media - yet play CDs just fine.

Try a "cleaning CD/DVD" and see if that helps/

If the cleaning doesn't work, the lens and/or laser for the CD portion of your combo drive may be dying.

On my 5680, it was the DVD laser that died first, followed 8 months later by the CD laser.

My symptoms increased from failure to read from DVD to the DVDs no longer being recognized. Same with the CD...over time the drive simply didn't recognize that there was any media in the drive.

If you're still under warranty, I'd send that sucker in if the cleaning doesn't help because the CD laser may be giving up the ghost.
