Is the M1210 comparable in performance to the E1705 if both have the 256MB video cards in them? I'm looking for something small with comparable power to my friends laptop so we can play some games, but I need a smaller size.

That depends upon which card you are talking about. If you are comparing to the e1705 with 7900GS then HELL NO, the 7900GS is much more powerful than the 256MB 7400go in the m1210 and will have much better gaming performance. It's apples v oranges there.
If you mean the mobility x1400 in the e1705, then the answer is still no; the x1400 is still more powerful than the 7400go but not by as large a margin. But, all this is relative to what resolution is being used and of course all the other specs of the laptops being compared.
Look, the m1210 is pretty much the best 'small' laptop for gaming out there at the moment, and will play most games quite well from a couple years ago... but getting into todays games it is starting to struggle keeping a good framerate at anything above low settings. That is the price you pay for choosing a smaller form factor I am afraid. Unless you want to hang out for the Asus XG station (and see how well that works...) if you want a really good gaming laptop you are going to have to go to at least a 15.4" model.

Keep in mind the Asus XG station will also only be providing a 1x PCI-E slot (not 16x or whatever normal desktops get), it may be quite a bit faster than integrated - depending on what GPU you have plugged into it - but it still won't quite be comparable to a desktop running the same GPU.
