9880 Video Issues/Fan

Thread Starter
I've had my Sager for a little over a year now.

Symptoms:
-Video card fan does not activate, even with fn+ f2 feature
-Snowy screen in variety of different patterns. (checkerdish, lines vertical and horizontal)
-Screen turns off after logging in, sometimes before that.

If I start my computer cold I can get pass the log in screen, after that I believe the video card gets too hot and starts displaying distorted pattern images, eventually the computer shuts the screen off. The fn + f2 button kicks the other fans on except for the video card fan, so I tested the video card fan separatly and it works. Other posts say that when it starts displaying snowy patterns it is damaged permanently and must be replaced. However, whenever I start it cold the snowy pattern is gone and If I do replace the graphics card it will only overheat again because the fan still does not kcik on. Is there an advance BIOS setting I can access that gives me more settings to play around with. I think the key here is to get that fan or maybe the fan sensor to work.

-How do I get the video card fan to work?
-Is it BIOS related? If it is the BIOS, it only allows me to set the fan to contious or automatics.
-How do I access the advance BIOS feature?
-Can someone please point me in a direction here or a post, my searches have turned up nothing except for to replace my card, and sticking an external fan to my video card.

IIRC, there is an option in the BIOS settings screen (I believe you hit F2 when prompted to at boot time) to set the behavior of the Fn-F2 key combination to toggle between "full" fans and "auto". In the "full" setting at least, both fans on my 9860 come on. You could go to Sager's site and download the latest BIOS from them and try it again, or write Sager an e-mail with your 9880's S/N (assuming it is a Sager branded notebook), and they will send you the latest version for your computer.

have you blown out the fan with compressed air? does it rotate when blown with compressed air? If you are technical savvy I would highly recommend removing the video card cover to make sure that the fan is completly connected to the motherboard. I would also highly recommend removing the video card and then the heatsink and applying arctic silver 5. go to www.arcticsilver.com and read the instructions on how much to apply.

First just check the fan and connection. do your other fans work?
