toshiba satellite pro m15-s405 problem

I need help with my wife's satellite pro m15-s405 that's about 3.5 years old. It had been running slow all week and then last night it would not boot up. When you power the laptop up it sits frozen on a screen that says toshiba in the center of the screen with some icons underneath that and then says centrino in the bottom right corner. After a minute or so that screen goes away and it just says built-in hdd password. I've tried the recovery cds and another boot disc but nothing happens. I hear the cd spin up but nothing. I've tried the del and esc keys but can't get into the bios. On Monday I'll try and get an adapter so that I can put the 2.5” drive into my desktop. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think you're right, but I can't get the toshiba recovery cds to boot up or another cd called the ultimate boot disc. What do I need to do to get a cd to boot? Thanks

When you get a replacement HDD, the recovery disk will work just fine

Try pressing c a few times dring the red toshiba screen with the Ultimate boot CD in the drive. That should take you to a one time boot off the optical drive. From there you should be able to run the diagnstic tools on UBCD to test the HDD.

I know this is an old thread, but wanted to comment because my hard drive recently failed on the same computer (Toshiba M15-S405) Apparently the Toshiba 40GB model that was in there is prone to failure and a lot of M15 owners have had their drives die. I replaced mine with a Seagate 100GB model and it works great. To change the boot order in the BIOS at the Toshiba screen press the escape key, hit F1 to enter the BIOS and in the upper corner on the first page you can change the boot order. Make sure the cd room boots before the hard drive and you'll be fine.
