Which ultraportables have most resonable built-in speakers?

Hi,

I guess the subject pretty much sums it up. I'm in the market for a machine weighing 4 pounds or less. It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest, and I'm not opposed to buying refurb or used. As an example, one of the units I've been contemplating is the Dell D400. They seem to be available with relatively decent configurations for under $600. One of the things I like about this unit is that the speaker is on top, as opposed to the underside of the machine.

I realize that no machine this size will have speakers that will rock my world, but I make heavy use of text to speech
in my day to day, so I need a speaker that's at least clearly audible in most typical environments.

Any thoughts as to which machines to consider, and which to avoid would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

I have an Asus S5n, and the little mono speaker is the worst thing that i have ever herd in my entire life... (well a little exaggeration) but it is only suitable for system beeps and default system tones.

Anyways my girlfriend has a new Dell D420 and i was actually really impressed with the sound quality coming off of it... It sounds pretty good.

could you get a little attach-on flat speaker bar or something peripheral? that would greatly expand your options and sound quality too. a little bit of duct tape... anyway i could recommend a few models if you're interested in going this route.

I won't dismiss this option altogether, but just to put things in better perspective, let me clarify what it is I need. I am visually impaired, actually, I can't see at all; therefore, I use a screen reader that utilizes text to speech to tell me what's on the screen. So basically, for me, going with a peripheral speaker unit would be like having to remember to tote along my LCD. The only way I would even consider something like this is if the speaker unit were very small, and self powered via USB, but there would have to be very compelling reasons to go with a computer that required this sort of thing over one that didn't.

Again, I don't need the computer to have speakers capable of filling a room with sound, but ideally, I would like a machine with a 12 inch screen or smaller, weighing 4 lbs or less, that has a speaker which is good enough to be very clearly audible in a reasonably quiet room, with perhaps a hotel heater or some other similar thing running in the background.

Thanks again to everyone for all your thoughts,
