HardDrive Dead? (Ferrari 3000)

Hello all!

I'm trying to fix or locate the problem with my friend's Acer Ferrari 3000.

The initial problem was that Windows XP startup would freeze on the load screen. He then tried to solve the problem by re-installing the system with the Acer Ferrari 3000 Recovery CD. That didn't work, the recovery process would freeze at 3%.

This is where I came in the picture. I tried to do a fresh format/install with Windows XP CD. The clean format wouldn't go through, some error occurred.

I myself own an old Acer Travelmate 230, so I figured I'd switch the harddrives with the Ferrari 3000 and the Travelmate 230:
  • The Ferrari 3000 won't boot up with my Travelmate 230 harddrive, but I figured that's just because my harddrive has all drivers and stuff installed for Travelmate 230. (when I boot it with Safe Mode it stops at Mup.sys)
  • When I try to format the harddrive from Ferrari 3000 with my Travelmate, some error occurs and it doesn't go through.
So my question is (for now): is the harddrive from Ferrari 3000 possibly damaged or is it just not compatible with my Travelmate? Or is there possibly something wrong with the Ferrari 3000 motherboard or BIOS? Is there a way for me to make sure that the harddrive is broken?

The BIOS version of the Ferrari 3000 is 3A22, if that's any help.

Thank you for your time,

Sure sounds like it's going bad. Some drives have SMART technology, which will tell you the drive is going to fail soon. I've got a Toshiba in the drawer I was using for linux that's now like that.
I'd get a message like: "DANGER WILL ROBINSON! S.M.A.R.T. TECHNOLOGY IS PRETTY SURE DRIVE IS GOING TO FAIL. TOO BAD, SO SOLLY! BACKUP DRIVE IMMEDIATELY- OH, ALMOST FORGOT, HIT F1 IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE BOOTING. HAVE A NICE DAY!"

Of course, it made this horrible, intermittent grinding noise too once it was booted and running, if I didn't notice on the boot screen.
