4780 CDRW reading problem?

Well my cd drive is sorta funky. Sometimes when I insert some discs it'll make a shuffling sound as if the cd is burned incorrectly or dirty and it can't find the data it needs to auto start. It only happens on certain discs and other disc I insert start up perfectly.

On the discs it has a hard time reading if I give it a few tries it is able to finally start the disc but I cannot install anything off of it. :P It keeps reading and reading and reading and my hard drive light is on during that time, as if it is copying the entire cd onto my harddrive before it can start installing. I use Alcohol 120% and some of these games require me to backup the cd to my hard drive and then load the backup onto the virtual drive to start the install.

Any ideas? Maybe I need to reinstall drivers or format my computer? Or maybe this is a faulty cdrom drive?

I have seen the drive in my 4780 have trouble reading CDs that other CD drives can read with no problem. As you said, it will sit there and sound like there's some kind of activity, but the operating system can't see the CD drive when this is occurring. One of the CDs that this happened to was the Sager driver CD that shipped with the system. I had to reboot the system several times to finally get it to read it. But like you said, I don't know if it's a general characteristic of the drive, or if we just might have bad units.

Well after numerous tries I was finally able to copy the information I needed off the cd. I guess it's the drive itself having some difficulties reading some cds. Sometimes when I insert a DVD I will have to reinsert it to get windows to autoplay.

Most cds won't have any problems being recognized but sometimes I will get one that'll take a bit of work.

CDRW trouble reading CDRs or DVDs

Which version of CDRW drives do you have?

Does it happen to be the TEAC-224E-A?

Thanks!

Also, have you tried cleaning the lens with a little alcohol? The way it's placed, it's not hard to get fingerprint smudges on it.

I have the same problem with DVDs. It will read some of them fine and others it won't read at all. They are all factory DVDs not copies. I have cleaned it and it doesn't help at all. I think the unit just doesn't work very good. Anyone RMAed this part? Did it fix the problem? Thanks.

Sounds like a bad device to me. It trys and trys and trys to determine the media and while it is doing this "EVRTHING" gets locked up until it finally determines that the device is not readable -- this can take a very long time.

I got a new DVD/CD-RW from Sager because of this issue and everything plays perfectly now. In fact this one is sturdier and the disk don't get as hot in it. I am amazed by Sager's support. You should give them a call.
