Well, SigmaTel is going to be pissed - they're going to get less kickbacks from Creative now for the upgrade.

Here's hoping the next iteration of the XPS laptop has eSATA built-in so there's really no other use for the ExpressCard54 slot other than this card. All they'd need to do is replace the arguably easily-replaced-with-a-cheap-USB-substitute SD/MMC reader and add a single eSATA port in its stead - it's roughly the same size lengthwise, and isn't that entire assembly sort of semi-removable?

I'm surprised this isn't getting more attention.

Well this doesn't get me bailing on my Audigy 2 ZS anytime soon...

For now, the only version released is unfortunately the X-Fi Extreme Audio. It is extreme only because it is written in its name as it doesn't include the X-Ram, EAX 5, ASIO or the SoundFont 24 bits. The release date and prices of these cards aren't known yet.

Right... you shouldn't and couldn't swap for this card... it's exciting because it's an expresscard. your card is a pcmcia card.

All the new core (2) duo based laptops do not have pcmcia slots (only expresscard). while your laptop does not have an expresscard slot, only pcmcia.

I'm happy to see this. I am on the beta for the PC card to PCMCIA, but it is not working very well with my PCMCIA sound blaster.

Ok so not only does it stick out like half an inch from the laptop but there is a thick little cable and a breakout box, too?

I (obviously) missed that part .

I feel just a tad bit better for not having a totally screaming laptop. I'd still give anything to have your expresscard 'problem' though...

It'd be nice if they made a PCMCIA version as well since I'd imagine the MINORITY of people out there have ExpressCard slots. Seems like they're really alienating a huge portion of the market (*cough*me*cough*) by not adapting the 32-bit PCI X-Fi for notebook use. It'd probably sell much, much better in the short run.

There are already PCMCIA audio cards if you have a PCMCIA slot.

There were zero ExpressCard audio cards before (I looked). Now there is one.

Yes, it would be nice to see a PCMCIA X-Fi. It would be nice to see an ExpressCard audio card that had 3D acceleration support for games, (EAX 5) too (which this one does not have).

"it doesn't include the X-Ram, EAX 5, ASIO or the SoundFont 24 bits."

To me that seems like a PCI express version of the Audigy ZS notebook card. They just changed the name.

Are you sure ALL new core 2 duo laptops do not have PCMCIA slots? My SZ370P/C with Intel T7200 has got a PCMCIA slot...

True that there are core duo and core2 duo laptops with pcmcia slots, however, the Dell laptops based on merom and yonah do not... I note that we are in the "Dell > Dell 17+ Inch Screen Notebooks" section of notebook forums.

None of that info is actually confirmed so keep your fingers crossed. I hope it does include all those extras. The only thing it probably wont include is X-Ram. Im pretty sure everything else will be supported. I found another article on this. When I bump into it again Ill post it for you guys.

Unless I'm mistaken, Creative's sound cards won't be of much use in Vista, since it does everything in software now...

Many of the effects and extras Creative provided are done by Windows itself now, and they also got rid of DirectSound and DirectSound3D (no more hardware acceleration, and support for only stereo software mode as a fallback).

I would have been excited about this pre-vista, but now I'm not seeing the advantage of having a discrete graphics card if it's just going to be a better quality DAC with a better SnR...
