Dell 9400/E1705 - would it be possible to install a second internal HDD?

Thread Starter
I would like to install a second 2,5" SATA drive into my 9400/E1705. Does anybody know if that is possible. Maybe with some kind of adapter? Is the DVD-Drive removable? If it aint, i have got enough space inside it because i dont have a ghrapics cards, just the onboard one...

I have heard there is a dvd adaptor for ata ide drives, but I have been unable to find one for sale

If an sata hdd dvd-drive adapter existed, I would jump at it like a fat kid on a cupcake

Of course, if someone try this, can you explain how to put a second hdd in the burning place. It s not too small?

there was an adaptor that was made in china (very few ever made it over here and were sold at absurd prices) for the dell9300 which likely would work (with the right drive) in the 9400. there is no room to add a second one without removing the optical drive even if you got your machine with the intel integrated graphics. sadly however none of the adaptors appeared on the market since and dell never (even in china) released an official one. either way your out of luck sadly.

best bet is to just buy a usb powered external hard drive enclosure and toss your spare drive into that.

There are a bunch on ebay. I was wondering the same thing for my 6400. Are the 9400 and 6400 optical drives the same size/dimensions?

None, it's bought from a local store in China and sent to me in Norway by a forum member. There are no labels or other means of identification. picture

Is PATA the regular IDE drives like the Inspiron 6000 has?

Yes, PATA = Parallel ATA which is not SATA. It's also known as ATA6.
