Which Macbook Should I go For? Advice Please.

Hi Guys,
After two weeks of much thought I have decided to take the plunge and move from Windows to Mac OS. I am just wondering if I could get some advice on which macbook to opt for the entry level 1.83ghz core 2 duo version or the mid level 2.0ghz version. Will the difference in memory and processer cache size make much noteable difference. Will software tend to lag on the entry level version. Any advice you give would be greatly appreciated I plan to call sales and place an order tomorrow. Also I am opting for the education discount but are the sales reps willing to haggle any further?

The MacBooks are the same except for the processor and harddrive/optical drive options. The cache probably won't make much of a difference for universal apps but it will probably speed things up a bit with rosetta apps.

The most prudent thing is just to get what you can afford. If you can afford the 2.0 then do it.

Also, the best deals will probably be from Amazon. No tax, no shipping, and usually at least a 100 dollar rebate. Apple charges both tax and shipping and will not haggle down.

The education discount is like 5%sih...not all that bad...shop around...The 2.0 ones have the faster drives as was pointed out..as for black or white..thats personal preference...the black one does have a bigger drive BUT they are amazing easy to work on and replace the drive...just kinda pulls right out...

kakaze, im wondering if maybe a sticky with all this sort of info is in order. with all the people switching in the last year, i think a sticky would serve them best?

describing differences in current configs, something that could continue to be updated maybe.

Just seems like a ton of these exact threads, maybe with one to two word title variations.

mid level

Even if there was a sticky we'd probably get 50 different threads on the subject still.

Issues such as performance between the 4 and 2 meg cash, while quantifiable, are still very much a subjective thing. One person might be able to tell that it's faster or slower but most people won't be able to without a side by side comparison.

Thanks for the advice guys my only qualm now is the price of the mid level machine. I live in the UK and even with the educational discounts I am still paying more than i would have to pay for the same system if I was living in America. The same can be said of Ipods where apple charge an extra £60 - £80 for the exact same models in England. Does anyone know how to import a macbook to the UK with minimal import taxes?
