I've been thinking about painting my 9400, but i was wondering if doing so voids the warranty, and if so, why?

Buy a palmrest and lid from ebay. If you need to send it in for repair you will still have a stock case. paint the one from ebay and put yours in the closet

Checked ebay lately? I've only been able to find one palmrest and no lid Besides, dell doesnt care if you paint anyway.

Yeah, but odds are the guy that ends up working on it may not be so enlightened to fix your system. Or worst case Depot will swap your painted shell for an original. Technically they can't void your warranty unless they were somehow able to prove that the paint caused the failure with the system.

Whatever you do though, remember to completely disassemble your system. The solvent in paint can contaminate the LCD and make it look like a lava lamp when you're done. If you do your palmrest I suggest you do your best to remove the touchpad. Follow the service manuals to know how to get most of everything taken apart.

Don't forget to mask off the threaded holes for screws. Paint can ROYALLY screw up threads. However, most of the thread-bosses are on the sides you won't be painting. So masking off the opposite side will suffice.
