so i have a 5680 by sager with the realtek soundcard......i was gonna buy the logitech z680's......

my questions are, does anyone think i should get a new sound card for these speaker, if so which do you recomend?\

also when i get a new external soundcard, does that mean that from now on i plug into the external soundcard for the speakers, or i can still use the jacks on the back.......\

if i do purchASE the logitech speakers, should i be setting these up through the optical spdif port, or through the headphones?\

i use my computer for gaming and music(mp3, light production work)

any answers will be appreciated

This is one of your questions that I can answer:

Assuming that you want surround sound (5.1) from your speakers, then you have two options with MP3 music: 1. Since MP3 is stereo, you can use the Dolby Pro Logic II algorithm built into the Logitech speakers to derive 5.1 matrixed channels from the stereo MP3. In this case you can use the optical output of the soundcard, which will supply the Logitech speakers with stereo PCM signal. 2. You can use the matrix algorithm built into the soundcard. For Creative soundcards it's called EAX CMSS. In this case the output from the soundcard will be 5.1, and you have to use 5.1 analogue cables for it. (Optical cables do not have enough bandwidth to carry 5.1 uncompressed channels)

For gaming, the answer is easy if you want surround sound: use analogue cables. SPDIF will only carry 2 channels.

Optical and Coaxial SPDIF wires are digital and therefore generally loseless. However, they can only be used with DVDs utilizing AC-3 or DTS. With anything else they can only provide Stereo. Not very high quality stereo either. Only 24bits/96KHz. With analogue wires you can get surround sound with almost everything. (For stereo sources it will be matrixed, however.)

one last question, i just went out to circuit city and checked out the logitech z680's.....i thought they sounded great, im also going to buy the audigy 2 nx external sound card, on the box of the speakers it said a number of cables are not inculded, through this setup im planning to get, would i want to buy better cables then what they are providing to me, or would those stock cables be fine?

You will need 3x 1/8inch stereo male-male cables. I think it's included. Generally one should always buy better cables than those provided. However, I don't think anyone makes high-quality cables with 1/8inch connectors (these cables aren't associated with audiophile quality), so I guess you can stick with those provided.
