Aurora m9750...worth the wait? - Page 7

Thanks for clearing that up about the motherboard, it makes a lot of sense. And yeah, I have to agree with you on looks. The Sager and other 17" Dual Core + SLI all look really bulky, unlike the sleek design of the Arima chassis.

Offtopic: Yesterday, April 1, if Alienware put that the m9750 was released & brought you to a configurator page, then at the last minute say "April Fools!" that'd be hilarious.

Well you certainly know your stuff. I know some of the next -gen graphics cards are power hungry monsters so I'm not sure how soon they will be coming to laptops - just look at the ATI R600 - they are saying it may need an additional power supply unit just for the graphics card!

But when I see trailers of directx10 games running on laptops it makes me feel it can't be that far away. I guess I'll make do with the m9750 and if there is no upgrade path ebay it to some lucky bidder or give it to the wife.

Looks like it's finally available in the US but still not in the UK

Not sure if that means it's out. If you go to aw.com and go to notebooks it isn't there. Judging by past experience though things appear on the UK website about a week or 2 after the US one.

The 9750 has been 'available' since the beginning of the month. But it isn't formally released yet. On the main page, they still advertise the 9700, instead of the 9750.

Thanks for clearing that up Shalamar. Hopefully it won't be long till it becomes 'available' here in the UK. Got my money waiting to go.

When it arrives it'll certainly be a 'night to remember' ... lol ... sorry, couldn't resist
post #127 of 157
I couldn't resist - alienware sent me an email offering £200 off the m9700 and I took it. Have I made a mistake - should I cancel the order and wait for the m9750?
Nah I don't think so. I mean, I'd have waited but as others have said on here to a guy that also order a 9700. The difference in performance for games won't be that significant. You'll miss the dual core aspect but games right now don't take advantage of it.

And anyway, get the 9750 and a couple of months down the line there'll be something else. These machines are top spec so I'm sure you won't be disappointed. However, if you really want the m9750 give them a call, I'm sure they can sort something out for you especially if you're in the very early phases.

What ever arrives... I bet you'll enjoy it

Yeah you didn't make a mistake, the m9700 is more then powerful for you. The people who are waiting are people who will use the all of the power (I think you guys will), and want Core 2 Duo.

Well guys I think I am opting out of the wait for the m9750 for now. To be honest the sole reason I was going to get it this summer was because of Crysis but I just looked at Gametrailers and IGN, and Crysis is listed as coming out in Novemeber about the time I graduate. So depending on how well the mobile G80s run the game I might buy the m9750, but if it can run it maxed out I think I am going to treat myself to one hell of a graduationgift I am talking watercooling SLi 8800 GTX if those are still uber powerful then. But I wish you all the best guys and I still can't wait to see the reviews you guys will be posting for the m9750 because it is going to be a sweet laptop. It almost pains me that I won't be getting it oh well. . .Bring on the Crysis!!!

Oh perhaps it was shadow run I was thinking of. Either way you want to play crysis at it's best so your going to want a Vista, a directx 10 graphics card, a ton of DDR II Ram and smoking hot processor (cooled of course - lol).

U think they'll have SLI drivers for Vista by then!??! Or heck: ANY vista drivers that make gaming on vista a little less of a let-down!?!?!?!? (I'm sure they will, just annoyed that my vista ultimate retail purchase plays games like i'm playing it on a Pentium 3 with a geforce ti4200)

Still trying to cancel my m9700 order - can't find my order number!

I have a choice of desktop/laptop and looking towards getting the top-of-the-line desktop that I can upgrade a lot and play hardcore games, and then saving some extra cash for a cheaper laptop for 3d graphics processing.
So, my choices:
1. Uber Desktop+cheapie laptop
2. Uber m9750+cheapie desktop

any suggestions?

If you're gonna be only gaming at home, I'd go for the high-end desktop and low-end laptop, but if you're gonna be taking the laptop around (and gaming with it outside of your home) then I'd go for the [amazing] laptop.
High-end desktop. You can get a kickass Area 51 SLI 7500 for like the same price as a semi highend m9750. And the Area 51 SLI 7500 is upgradable so you it'll last you longer. I'm not trying to put down laptops I just think if your going to be gaming at home its a better decesion to go with the desktop.
