Aurora m9750...worth the wait? - Page 8

I have to disagree. As already a desktop is much more upgradeable than a laptop so I'd get a good laptop and a basic PC which I will gradually upgrade as I get finances.

If you go for a cheap laptop it will frustrate the crap out of you. I had a low end laptop and after a couple of weeks stopped using it as it was just too frustrating. Most sub-£600 laptops won't even have a dedicated graphics so won't run any games at a level I would call playable - even general desktop performance won't be outstanding. However for under £600 you could buy yourself a really decent Desktop.

Example Budget
£2000

Good laptop £1500 = Excellent performance
Cheap Desktop £500 = Decent performance + very upgradebale

Good Desktop £1500 = Outstanding performance
Cheap Laptop £500 = Poor Performance

Obviously you could go for 2 mid-ranged options but as it is so much easier to update the desktop with a bit of ram, new graphics card etc. over time I would say invest in the laptop and just make sure the Desktop motherboard has good support for newer components (i.e. DDR II, SATA II, PCI-Express 16, recent processors) even if you can't afford the top components to go with it yet.

Anyway that's my 2 cents.

OK, a couple quick questions. I have been hearing much about the "Santa Rosa" platform. Currently the m9750 comes with the Intel 945PM + ICH7M-DH Chipset. Is this the technical name for the SR platform? If not does anyone know what the technical name will be so I can watch for it?

Both m97xx systems are using the same chasis and are availible with the internal TV tuner. Does anyone know if the tuner is HD? And are both system using the same remote? The m9750 config site says it is a USB remote, and the 9700 site makes no reference to the remote being USB. And would a USB remote mean I am plugging in a cable to my USB port which is connected to my remote, like to cable boxes of old. Or am I having to plag in a wireless reciever for the remote everytime I want to use it to watch something.

Thanks in advance...

Another question for those who already have an AW laptop... Is the clearview screen extremly glossy? Trying to figure out how much reflection I will get. Cant stand to be distracted by others in the room reflecting off the screen when I'm busy shooting things....

No, the m9750 does not currently feature the Santa Rosa chipset. It will likely be called something along the lines of "Centrino Pro" from what I've heard.

I can't answer your second question though since I've never had, or even seen an Alienware laptop in person.

The review on the 9750 by Laptop Magazine:

"...The 17.1-inch 1920 x 1200-pixel widescreen is one of the glossier ones we've seen and is prone to reflection in bright environments. (But who games with the lights on, right?)"

and..

"...The screen's good viewing-angle performance makes the m9750 ideal to share (again, just watch for reflections from lights and windows)."

Great intel, thanks for sharing. Guess I can always use an anti-glare screen cover for those times Im not gaming. Yes thats correct I do plan to use my m9750 for more than just gamin; blasphemous, I know, but its got to be done. Whats truely important, is that I get the better resolution...

That's weird. Shame they can't officially give out some info rather than a different story everytime you call. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

Are you in Europe then?.. A few people in the USA have already got them on order I believe.
'have' as in received or ordered?

Either way good for you!
They've only ordered and I think the first issued ship date for those "pre-orders" is sometime late May, most likely they will end up shipping early June which I really hope people don't get all fussed about as things like this happen all the time with a new product launch and Alienware doesn't want to be sending out systems that have any bugs so as to curb future complaints.

Sure wish I didn't have all of these plans of going to school and moving out this fall otherwise I'd be on the m9750 purchase plan as well.

Hi folks. Im just about to venture into the alienware world and purchase a new Area 51 m9750 notebook when it is released here in the UK. Its fairly pricey and im looking to cut the cost a bit. What I would like to know is if I buy the notebook with the smallest hard drive (80 Gb) and minimun RAM (1Gb) will there be enough space in the notebook for a bigger drive and extra RAM if I buy it seperately. I understand the drives are physically the same size but more concerned about the space for the RAM. Big brother who will be doing the upgrade is trying to convince me there will be room but just looking for someone else opinion. Any help out there???

Yes, if you have the option of upgrading later (financially), then go with 1GB of Ram and a small hard drive. Those are two of the easiest things to upgrade for the laptop, and doing so will not void your warranty.

On a similar note, a processor is one of the most difficult to upgrade (plus it voids your warranty) so if you can, get at least a 2.0GHz one. The video card (a second one) can be added without voiding your warranty but you'd have to send it in to Alienware.

Good luck.

P.S. My order is in Phase 6, but it's been in phase 6 for over a week. It strikes me odd that installing the OS and any additional software (which is none for my case) takes over a week.

Thanks TbbZz, that allays the fear a bit. Should have the money eventually but not just yet. Hopefully will get the 2.33 processor and the dual 512Mb video cards, treating myself. AS for the order from what I hear it wil be worth waiting for. Spare a thought for me though, cant order it till the supposed release date on the 28th of may.
