I have to disagree. As already a desktop is much more upgradeable than a laptop so I'd get a good laptop and a basic PC which I will gradually upgrade as I get finances.
If you go for a cheap laptop it will frustrate the crap out of you. I had a low end laptop and after a couple of weeks stopped using it as it was just too frustrating. Most sub-£600 laptops won't even have a dedicated graphics so won't run any games at a level I would call playable - even general desktop performance won't be outstanding. However for under £600 you could buy yourself a really decent Desktop.
Example Budget
£2000
Good laptop £1500 = Excellent performance
Cheap Desktop £500 = Decent performance + very upgradebale
Good Desktop £1500 = Outstanding performance
Cheap Laptop £500 = Poor Performance
Obviously you could go for 2 mid-ranged options but as it is so much easier to update the desktop with a bit of ram, new graphics card etc. over time I would say invest in the laptop and just make sure the Desktop motherboard has good support for newer components (i.e. DDR II, SATA II, PCI-Express 16, recent processors) even if you can't afford the top components to go with it yet.
Anyway that's my 2 cents.

Great intel, thanks for sharing. Guess I can always use an anti-glare screen cover for those times Im not gaming. Yes thats correct I do plan to use my m9750 for more than just gamin; blasphemous, I know, but its got to be done. Whats truely important, is that I get the better resolution...
... maybe.
