I have an old Lexmark optra color 45 printer. The problem is that I do not have any parallel ports on my laptop 9100 inspiron. So I bought an USB to parallel cable.I am using the original driver for XP from Lexmark site and the printer works fine but after restart I get a message New Hardware found and I have to reinstall the printer in order to get it running again.Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to fix it.Could it be the cable that I am using coz it is actuially a device?
thank you in advance

I don’t really have a clue but it might have something to do with the original driver for the printer expects the printer to be connected to a parallel port which is not plug and play like USB is. I think the adapter you have is just fooling the printer and computer so that the printer will work with the computer with a program. When you restart that program must be temporary so once restarted you have to start it all over again. lol I am sure this is a confusing explanation but that’s why I see happening. I ma not sure if there would be a way to stop this though.

Time for a new printer???

I see what you mean. When I hook it to my roommate's computer via parallel port it works fine. It is old but supports A3 and I need it for small drawings(as Im studing civil engineering).Maybe I will just have to live with it the way it is

this might be really far-fetched but i have seen that symptom before.

Check to make sure the RunOnce entry exists in your resgistry...

start>run>regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>RunOnce

If that folder/entry was deleted somehow, it will cause driver installations to partly fail and it it retry on reboot.
