I've read in various places that the 1705/9400 will support up to 4GB of ram 2GB x 2 SODIMMs. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I am actually thinking about upgrading since I am constantly running out of memory. When my PF usage gets to 1.7-1.8 GB, things start acting funny.

I run two IDE's (Integrated development environment), Apache Tomcat server, an Http debugger, Yahoo messenger, google desktop, and a slew of other processes... so I'm running out of memory at 2GB.

Anyone actually have 4GB on their 1705/9400? I don't think too many people are running this configuration. If I remember correctly, 4GB of 667MHZ ram is about $3000 and about $2000 for the 533 MHZ.

Looks like prices have come down since I last checked.

Will XP recognize all 4GB? I had a friend who ordered a laptop with 4GB but he said XP will only regconize about 3 Gigs.. Can anyone confirm?

According to crucial.com 2GB the limit on the E1705. Check for yourself if you don't believe me

P.S. You can try it and if it doesn't work send me the 2GB you cant use. :P

Although you can insert 2 x 2GB SODIMM in the 1705 windows XP will only utilize 3.2GB according to various users and even DELL will warn you that not all of the RAM will be accessible. Considering its cost 2GB would be the sweet spot for RAM and 3GB (1x 2gb and 1x 1gb) would be the optimal.

No need to check. I was on the phone with a Dell tech today to work on my Blue screen of death issue.. I asked him if the laptop would support 4GB. He said "no".

However, I think "officially" they don't support it but the motherboard will. The OS won't, unless you upgrade to a 64 bit OS or Vista.

XP will be around for quite sometime just like 98 did when Windows 200 was out. Ensure the Ram is either PC4200 or PC 5300

The BIOS limits the memory to 3.2GB...Vista will see 4GB no problem, but the BIOS will still only allow 3.2GB...

You could try flashing it to XPS m1710 bios. It would likely work, but for that kind of money and a possible risk (worst case scenario, something might go wrong, but probably not) you really won't see it as a worthwhile upgrade. I upgraded my desktop to 4gb, and it was a waste of money.

Ok, guys, the E1705 will support 4gb of RAM. It's the same motherboard that's in the M1710(basically) and they sell 4gb for the M1710. If you're running XP, it's a waste to use 4gb because of what XP's limits are as far as addressing the memory. If you're using Vista 64bit, then go for 4gb(if you want to spend the money, as it's going to be at least $1,000 for both sticks if you get a really good deal, and as much as $2,000 if you don't). If you're running XP now and you're going to be moving to Vista, then just go ahead and get the 4gb, as it certainly won't hurt anything in XP. But make sure you install the 64bit version of Vista, as the 32bit version has the same constraints as XP from what I've read. It might actually address the whole 4gb in 32bit Vista, but I'm not sure. I'm running 2gb in all my systems now and I haven't felt a need for anything more yet.

32-bit Vista will address 4GB with no problem...its not the same as XP in that respect.

I've heard tales that 32-bit Vista will have same limits that XP has, and that the 64-bit supports something ridiculous like 128gb. I can confirm niether of those tales because I'm too lazy to look it up.

Newegg has the 2gb sticks for around $450 (total $900 for a pair) which is as close to 'reasonable' as I've seen them. The better idea would be to sell the e1705 and buy a Clevo build with 4 RAM slots.

Sorry, I was a little wrong...32-bit Vista supports 4GB RAM, 64-bit supports 128GB

How do you flash a 1705 with the 1710 bios? The upgrade utility for the bios detects that you are on a 1705, not a 1710 and will not let you flash.

There's a thread around here somewhere with a sticky on how to do it. Just get into the Dell 17" forum and browse around.

you heard it correct, xp/vista 32 bit will have a same limitation. I don't have 128GB ram system so I can't confirm it, but I know 64 bit OS did see all the 64 GB ram

I have 2x2GB OCZ DDR2 800Mhz on my i9400/e1705. It does recognize 4GB installed but BIOS says only 3,3GB is available. The same thing when on Windows XP and Vista, it still reports 3,3GB usable RAM.
