Followup to my last post: Smart Alec came in last week, tried it for first time this weekend, works great. The hip strap helps reduce the shoulder weight a lot, and could probably carry it quite a ways like that.
One caveat: The backpack itself will fit that Monolith II rather snugly, so much so that I was only able to fit the rest of the notebooks equipment in it and my pullover sweatshirt I use for the datacenters. It will not replace my Eastpak, only supplement it (they both have their uses in my life, so not going to return it).
Last note: If you get a non-backpack carry bag, get their Comfort Strap to replace the stock shoulder strap. Good chance you'll fall in love with it as much as you would your notebook.
