Quick Laptop Question

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, I had a few quick questions I hoped that someone in the know would be able to answer. I am heading to Iraq in a few months and would very much like to be able to bring my computer gaming addiction with me. However that involves buying a notebook. I know they are not ideal for gaming, but with space limits, I can’t bring a desktop. I have been playing games for a long time now, but honestly I don’t know much about hardware, and even less about laptops. I was just hoping for some general technical help, anyway here are some of my questions:

•I only faintly understand the difference between the newer processors such as an Intel core 2 duo 2.0GHz, vs. a 3.4 Pentium processor. Should I go for the newer processor or is the older one still worth looking into?
•Should I go for 2Gigs of RAM or will 1 work?
•Anything special I should know about cooling laptops? (I am not heading into the coolest climate in the world)
•I am hoping to do this with about $1200-1500 is that realistic?
•I wanted to get a webcam to be able to chat with loved ones at home, are the built in webcams that Dell XPS and HP offer worth it, or should I buy a separate one?

Just basically what kind of machine would you get if you where in my situation. Any ideas or advice at all would be greatly appreciated

Thanks a ton in advance for your help

If I were you and on that budget I would get a Dell M1210. It has a webcam built in it, very fast processer( I would go with a Dual Core instead of a older one because your computer is going to be knew and is going to have one already in it. ). Second for the climate thing..i am not totally sure..maybe bring a fan to keep it cooler (ask other people about this one). That budget is realist (more than what I paid for mine, but if your getting the system I suggest it really doesn't leave much room to change stuff. Go to this link below. I configured a whole Dell M1210 (and if you don't decide to go with it try and get something that has a webcam build in, or at least thats what I would want, because a webcam is just another thing to carry.)

1 Core 2 Duo blows P4 out of the water insanley. Basically asking if you want to be Germany, or Poland in 1939, Also C2D runs colder then the North Pole, compared to the P4, so C2D is your best option

2. I'd go 2 gigs espically now with Vista

3 This little puppy is a good for your job

4 Yes, but you might have to buy ram from some where like Newegg since you can get it cheaper. But if you wanted a dedicated GPU (for like BF2, and such) 1,800 would be a better range

5 Really up to you, I'd go for internal just for portability.

BTW I hope you will be alright in Iraq, Good luck

Edit: I would reccomend a Notebook like this Just upgrade the ram to 2gb, and get the Geforce Go 7600, and it will preform like a dream

Theres a nice review here on the 5500

Also if you've heard the horror storys about Alienware.. trust me it's from the 7700 (I owned one I'm not even going to get into) So far I've only heard good about these notebooks

Wow they sell Alienware that cheap?!? Cool, still to high for my budget, but still cool. If you can get that it would do better than what I suggested.

Also I forgot to say Good luck and come home safely
