attaching an external display/projector to 3790

Are there any tricks to hooking up a projector or other VGA monitor to the 3790? I can't get anything to show up. The <ctrl>-f5 and <fn>-f6 key combos make the laptop LCD go black, but the external display never gets a signal. I've also tried updating ATI mobility drivers and working with the Catalyst control panel, to no avail.

yes one key trick is it needs to be already plugged in (monitor connected to the computer and powered up) when you boot up. Learned that the hard way, futzing around with the frigging thing during a trial. I will PM you so you know you got your answer.

I use this feature once a month. I agree with erisalit32, it is easier when the projector is already connected to the computer. However, last night, I was able to plug it in to the computer after I was already in windows XP. My screen resolution was 1280x1024 and the projector matched up to that resolution. Older projectors will not be happy with differing resolutions. In that case, you will need to hit the Fn key one time to black the LCD screen on the laptop and only use the projector. Or your laptop and LCD might have to be at equal resolutions (ie 800x600 maybe) to use both at the same time.

sometimes, I have to wait a few seconds before hitting the Fn key combination a second time so that it will work.

Good luck!

I'm not one to reply to old topics, but this one caught my eye.

Even without being plugged in when you start up, it's no big deal to make stuff display on another screen.

You just have to go into Control Panel and change from Single display to Dual or Clone, I forget which. It will display fine on the other screen without needing to mess with the resolution on your laptop.
