Inspiron2600 rebuild (no CD)

Thread Starter
I have a Dell Inspiron2600 whose CD decided to take a crap (bad memory error). I want to rebuild this machine (it's XP Home) using an external USB drive. First, can I? Secondly, if so, do I just copy the entire XP CD onto the external drive? Or should I make a bootable floppy, boot to that and then copy the XP files to the HD on the Inspiron?
I think I've had too many cups of coffee, asking all these questions but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

The 2600 I don't think supports booting from USB at all. You're going to have to borrow a CD-ROM from another machine (The 2600 will take a standard slim Optical drive) and install the OS that way.
