Finally got my 7800 swapped for 7900 under warranty

Been having an ongoing issue with temps with my 7800 but not as bad as some. I didnt feel comfortable with gaming - forget overclocking. In a well cooled A/C environment it was fine.

Using the laptop on the lap was a bit rough! Sometimes the idle temps were above 80c. Yikes.

The kicker? I was overseas. Several months ago I convinced Dell to send another card. You could guess it was another 7800... a refurb. Im back in the US for a period of time and had a BSD with heavily distorted screen - like a mem corruption. This time I was able to talk them into sending the 7900

Big difference! Under load Im struggling to hit 80deg now. If I overclock slightly and turn the fans on manually it still stays very cool.

I have since turned the clocks to stock - it was just a test.

nice My GS even when playing oblivion on ultra-high quality, only gets my card to 70C (stock clocks)

Im in the UK and i did contact dell about the temps on my 7800go, although ive not had a problem with arrors or anything they just said we'll put in another 7800 and see how it goes, when i mentioned a 7900 the guy just said i wouldnt get one of those ever! My warranty is out now tho so i just live with the high temps , it gets to 87c when on idle!

Out of warranty is tuff to get around. I didnt post all my history on this issue to save space and reading time but one thing I had done was log temps and provide them in one of the emails.

If you just cannot get help from Dell, keep an eye out for the 7900GS cards offered up for sale. Might be able to finda good deal on one!

In the meantime, I suggest "I8kfanGUI" so you can run the fans manually. The version Im using that worked pretty well with the 7800 is "V3.0 beta 3"

For the GPU control I setup like this:
1. 50degC - 40degC off off
2 60degC - 50degC slow slow
3 70degC - 60degC slow slow
4 80degC - 70degC slow slow

I named that "normal" and used it as a default for quite a while. GPU temp offset for my 7900 is 8degC but it seems like it was diff for the 7800.

it was 10 degree c off for me when i last used it, to be honest i cant be bothered as its in the same room we watch tv in and the last thing i want is the misses moaning again

Thats why you set the offset... makes it accurate. The "slow" setting is VERY quiet... and in fact if you use it it will rarely if ever go to "fast". If noise is an issue its more quiet than having the fan come on high every few minutes.
