Athlon FX Processors in Laptops

Does anyone know when we will see Athlon FX processors in laptops? The only thing I have heard about is a new laptop being developed by Eurocom that will support them. It seems really strange that they are not in notebooks already considering that they consume less power and generate less heat than Pentium processors with similar performance.

even if you see them sometime in the future, I wouldn't buy them for notebook style performance, the Athlon 64 processors are nearly as fast and cost about a third of the price of the FX processors, also, the Athlon Mobile 64 processors make a little bit less heat and also consume less power, I'd say they are the best bet for laptop performance

On top of all that, in gaming benchmarks the AMD 3400+ out performs the FX in certain aspects, only thing surpassing all chips currently is teh 3.2 EE which, i dunno bout you guys, is way past my budget

Once Socket 939 comes out and we are running 64-bit OS's.. whew.. better watch out.

Actually, for many uses, particularly gaming, the FX 53 is the top dog. Better than anything else out there. And that's with Socket 940 and 32-bit. With the change to 939 the FX-53 will have a 1000 MHz internal buss, effectively running at 2000 MHz. Plus it will not require ECC registered memory. And it costs a lot less than Intel's top offerings.

With 64-bit, which is coming faster and faster, the FX will stomp, simply stomp. Well, actually, it won't be a contest at all because the Intel's won't even run 64-bit.

There's no reason for not putting an FX into a laptop, as pointed out, it takes less power, produces less heat and on top of that, its a lot cheaper than its Intel rivals.

With the switch to 90 nm, which AMD is having a lot more luck with than Intel, primarily because of SOI (Silicon on Insulator) and assistance from IBM whose already doing it, the power and heat will likely be cut by at least a third to as much as half. Even with more processing power and speed. Probably cheaper too, as they get a lot more product out of the base chip.

It appears that the new Eurocom Phantom will be the first laptop to have the Athlon FX processor (and a ton of other new features). Apparently it will be released in May or June. Hopefully more similar laptops will follow!

There's a new review of the FX-53 vs the 3.4 EE in Ace's Hardware. Their conclusion, the FX-53 is top dog, not by much, but still top dog. Check it out http://www.aceshardware.com/read.jsp?id=65000288

As to the Eurocom Phantom, I wouldn't hold your breath on that. Eurocom has been known to be somewhat optomistic about upcoming models. Not that I wouldn't want to see it as soon as possible. Like today. But .... we'll see what happens.

Imagine now when the 64 bit OS comes out and the FX-53 is running on that, *drools*

Far Cry is supposed to release a 64-bit version in the near future. Shortly after the release of the basic 32-bit version.
