i was given a hp dv4000 with a broken LCD. i removed the top lid and lcd from the laptop and hooked it up to my moniter. will use it like a desktop. i want to format the hard drive and install my copy of xp pro, minus all the HP junk. some one told me that when i format my hdd without the lcd screen on the laptop that it will not recognize my moniter and i would end up with a blank screen. is this possible? thanks in advance

You'll be fine, you see a key on the top row with a picture of a laptop screen on it? It's usually one of the number keys on the top row, you use the "FN" and that key to toggle the external monitor, if you even need to.

Is there any display when you power on? can you see the boot up process? or is the monitor only active after windows has loaded?

If you can see the boot up process, then you should be fine with formatting
