Is this a good deal (IBM R50p)

Hi. Does anyone know if this is a real good deal? I might be able to pick up an IBM R50p (183223U) for about $2,500.

It has the P4-M 1.7, 1G RAM, 60 GB 7,200 rpm HD, Fire GL2 128M graphics card, 2x DVD multi-burner, and has the 15" 1600x1200 capable screen.

I tend to like the IBM's but was waffling between this and the T41p with similar components.

I wouldn't be buying it from an authorized dealer or anything, just someone that has a new one (through work I believe) but would rather use their old notebook & make some money instead. This unit should be fresh out of the box (and presumably under warranty).

Any help/input would be appreciated.

This looks like a pretty damn good deal....but if youre looking at those kind of specs you might want to wait for the T42 which is coming out in May i think....

That's a heck of a deal for a laptop that retails for more than $ 3,500. Just curious, the 183223U doesn't come standard with 1gig of RAM, did he add it on???

One of the benefits of the R50p over the T41p is the 15" UXGA screen. I would highly recommend the R50p (I have one) over the T41p.

Cept IBM doesn't make the R series, just the T.

What do you mean by this? Thinkpads are OEM'd by someone other than IBM??

Yea, R and X are manufactured by seme ODM (E something?? I can't remember) T is the one made by IBM.

I have seen the "IBM doesn't make the R series" rumor on this board here and there. Every time I ask an IBM rep about this, of course they act as if I'm insane.

As far as the 1G of ram, I doubt it actually has that. The guy I'm getting it from doesn't know anything about computers and asked a friend of his to tell him what was inside it. So I'm sure it's 512. But I still think it's a pretty good deal.

I'll be picking it up tonight or tomorrow, so I'll post some first impressions once I get it. I am psyched to check out the UXGA screen too.
