Getting dell to replace a battery?

So my 9 cell just dies after alittle over a year. Dell won't replace it because they say the battery has its own contract. I have a 3 year warranty with 3 year accident. Anyone know what I can do?

Buy a new one, Batteries are warranted for only 1 year no matter what warranty the rest of the system has. It is the crap-shoot of batteries that they can fail at any time without much warning. You'll just have to buy a new one. Check eBay you usually can get a much better deal than Dell.

Yea, thats what I am doing. I just dell knows they sell shit and they won't own up to it.

First of all, its not that Dell sells 'shit'. There isn't a single battery out there that will perform identically to the rest, its just the nature of the LiON technology they are using. Your usage patterns will have a profound effect on how the battery ages, however. Check this site out for more info www.batteryuniversity.com . I have owned 3 different Dell notebooks now. The first one I didn't understand the battery very well, and through my own personal usage managed to destroy it in a little over a year. Dell was kind to me at the time though and shipped me a new one anyway... the new one is still functional to this day with very little wear on it. All because I changed the way I used my computer (discharge cycles and such...)

You name me one Laptop manufacturer that'll warrant their batteries LONGER than a year. Extended warranties from third parties (like Best Buy or Magnavox or Service net) don't count. To the best of my knowledge not a SINGLE SOLITARY laptop maker will give you longer than a year's warranty on batteries.

tell them the battery is getting really hot and starting to make noises. They will probably replace it for fear of fire.

Dell is telling me that the battery is warrantied for a year from DATE OF MANUFACTURE.. IE - my system can be within a year old, but my battery is slightly older and I'm SOL.

Batteries have an unused shelf-life FAR GREATER than that of their useful life. Ever seen the expiration date on Alkaline Batteries? They're 5+ years in the future. Brand new rechargible batteries have a good lifetime.

Call Dell back and MAYBE they can see reason. A brand new battery can sit for years without any degredation to it's performance.

Incorrect. There are terms that we agree to up front in regard to the warranty. If it was an out of the air decision, I'd understand. I'm simply asking one of two things from dell: 1) Tell me where it says that batteries are warrantied from the date of manufacture (which is going to result in a battery warranty of less than a year from date of purchase). 2) Replace my battery. I could get ugly about it in small claims.. Instead, I may not buy another Dell.

I'm still saying that you got a bad phone rep who doesn't have a clue. I don't recall Dell ever stating batteries have a 1 year from date of manufacture warranty either. That's because a battery can sit on the shelf unused for a good long while before even BEGINNING to degrade. It's only until you first use a battery that the clock starts ticking.
