Help w/ new laptop purchase...

I am looking at buying a laptop while not going broke. How do these specs look. Will be used for Photoshop CS and buisness apps mainly. I am thinking of a Dell E1505.

Intel® Core™ Duo T2250 (1.73GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife
80GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Hi-Speed: Dell Draft N Wireless
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Windows Vista™ Premium
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)

I plan on upgrading the RAM through newegg later to save a few $$. I can pick this up for $1052 before shipping. Is this a descent buy or are there other vendors that can match the price or better that I should look at?

You might want to upgrade to 2GB ram
Other than that the specs look okish

Thats an average price for a new E1505. Compared to other vendors it is above average for the hardware your getting. I got mine (my sig) for $1100 brand new from dell.com

When you buy it call dell. Tell them you want to put it on buyer credit (well, if you can pay it off asap) and you should be able to get it $200 cheaper, or just add more junk to it and get it for the same price. It worked for me

Instead i bought an E1705.

Dell E1705, Core Duo T2250, 17"WSUXGA, 1GB RAM, 80GB 7200RPM SATA, 8x CD/DVD-RW, 256MB ATI RADEON X1400, Draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth Internal

I used a 20% off silent coupon code. It was originally $1650 or so. Pretty good savings. Of course I see now that you can get integrated Sound Blaster audio. Always my luck. 3 days after I order new gear is available.

One thing that burns me about Dells 17" laptops is the fact that they still use a small keyboard. WHy not add the numeric keypad like HP and Toshiba. All that real estate and they choose not to give you more desktop like functionality. Geeesh.

Actually the sound blaster isnt worth it, but it came on my system for free..... And my system is over 6 months old.. so .... its not new.

i agree with Sebby - memory if you can afford 2gb. Photoshop CS is is memory and processor hog.

I did say I will up the RAM once I get the system. I dod realize photoshop loves to devour memory. It will be a cheaper upgrade by buying it elsewhere other that Dell. My current laptop has 1.2GB in it and it takes a beating but in a week it will be up'd to 2GB. I have some graphic files that have eaten a rock solid GB of harddrive space each and everytime I upscaled them 10%.

What does buyer credit mean?

That would be nice in some cases. However, to have a numeric keypad and still keep all the keys at standard size, they would have to stretch the keyboard all the way out to the sides which would kill the skin. It would look really stupid, like an iBook G4 and the like... The Prez

Well I really like my E1505, just purchased it recently but if I were you... and this just me. I would tone down the harddrive (its a freaking SATA anyway) to the 5400 rpm... I think this saves like a 100$. I would then take the Duo up to the 2.00 ghz (4mb). The reason being, the processor is going to be doing most of just about everything. The video card isn't going to help a whole lot for Photoshop. You will play excellent DVD's and maybe even get into a little AutoCAD or maybe 3D Home Design, if you are more of a business oriented person. And definately pick up that extra gig of ram when you can.
