Buying a Dell on ebay?

I am getting close to purchasing a dell laptop, I more or less have decided on a 1705 configured like a m1710, I just didnt see the added value in the xps. The 1705 I configured was about 2000 said and done with tax and a 20% off coupon.

The other day just to see what was out there, I looked on ebay and came across a number of people reselling m1710's (and other models) that are band new, 1 in particular was 2299 and was configured exactly how my planned 1705 would be but it also had a 7950gtx, and it was an xps after all, for 300$ more it seems like a deal, configuring the same system from dell would be just over 3000$. After asking lots of questions to the seller and reading plenty of feed back it seems to be legit, what is the deal here? How are these people able to offer these computers at a lower price then dell direct? it doesnt make much sense.

If anyone has had any experience with such a transaction or has a reason I should stay away from ebay please let me know before I spend 2300$

Thanks for any advice

ebay is good if you buy safely and from reputable sellers.

Try dell outlet. You'll most likely get the 7900 gs instead of the 7950 gtx, but both cards are fast and pretty up to date. On the plus side, you get dell warranty as well in case your laptop breaks in the future. On ebay, theres no way to replace the laptop unless they come with warranty.

This does come with a full year warranty, so I should be ok in that respect.

Anyone else with any input?

I just ordered a Dell e1705/9400 from a reputable seller on eBay UK (he has sold over 10,000 Dell laptops on eBay and has next to no negative reviews out of 12000) - I haven't received it yet due to the dreadful postage service offered with the laptop; but no matter really, if anything goes wrong during its postage there is a returns policy. I have no complaints regarding the seller who has been of the utmost politeness and helpfulness, just his postage service was the weak link...

My advice would be to check the postage service is good and check if the seller offers returns policy and/or postal insurance (and as it seems you have already done, check all his ratings etc).

I would like to get a lot more things on Ebay but I just cant trust it. I would just get it from Dell because spending that much on Ebay is just to scarey for me. I guess if you use paypal you could be ok, but it doesn't cover it all.

I'm not to worried about the safety of doing an ebay transaction, I'm just woundering how all these resellers can get these great deals that we dont have acess to, is it that they just buy in bulk or something?

Exactly what I've been trying to find out. I think it's a combination of coupons with mass order discounts, ie, $250,000+.

@OP: I've bought a lot of laptops on eBay. In fact, the only laptop I've bought directly from Dell is the one I have right now, because of warranty and other issues. Just make sure you buy it new, that the seller can and does transfer the warranty. That they have a good reputation/rating. Then, you're pretty much guaranteed not to be using stolen property or have other problems.
