M6N shuts off when flexed!

When lifting the case up ( on battery power), if I'm lifting too close to the front, the case flexes a bit, the machine shuts down. Its as if the battery loses contact. I tried this while plugged in , and it didn't happen.

Do any other M6N owners reproduce this?

Do any other M6N owners have this behaviour?

Manny-

I sympathize and will try this tonight, I just got mine.

Man, that first battery charge goes fast!!

I have yet to even fdisk mine up. Plus, I got the flu this morning, not sure how long I will stay up bending xp pro to my will. Havent the stamina.

Before I try though- detailed explanation of how you are doing this, if you please. I am not going to push mine hard, my vice in the garage will NOT see this laptop, haha.

Hi Eric, thanks for the reply.

I'm not really doing anything special - When I would lift the laptop off my lap, I put my left hand on the from left side ( theres a ledge to hold on to), likewise my right hand would hold the back right, where there is another ledge. When lifting like that, if the case flexes a little, the machine shuts dead - like the battery has been removed. The first few times before I figured out the cause ( i thought the battery might be loose or something), it was very annoying, as when I would shift a bit with the laptop in my lap, I never knew if the machine would shut down or not - I lost a few downloads and some work before I finally nailed down the problem.

thanks,

Man-y

Manny-

I think you have a problem with your hardware.

I just tried picking mine up, holding it only from each corner. No problems.

Sorry!

Yeah definately a hardware issue

With the laptop, on, and open ( running solely on battery power) sitting on a table, just lift up the front, left side ( where the audio jacks/lights in the front are located) This should cause enough flex to cause the machine to turn off. I'll try to post a video of this happening either tonight, or tomorrow.

I will try to repro as well. I dont want to have this bug either!

I am unable to repro your bug on my M6800N. Keeps running just fine and I am not able to discern much flexing, if any at all.

As promised, here's the video. To the credit of the Asus tech support, he responded immediately and is working with me to resolve the issue

Ohh.... @#$!(*#$($#^(

I went to put mine down on a desk, the right back corner hit the desk first.. and poof, it shut down.

Battery contact problem.

Manny, please do keep me in the loop on this. If this is a case mod/hw fix, I may need to send mine back to my reseller.

Again, to reiterate- #$(*#&@$(#@$(#$@(*#$@(#$@

I've just received my M6N and have the same problem as you... or even worse:
Give the laptop a shake and it dies.

It might have to go back to the shop and replaced with something Sony.

*update*
I've just watched that video, mine is not worse but, I can imagine that it will eventually be as bad.

Really, Asus techsupport seemed to know the issue and the resolution. It seems like the fix can be applied by yourself at home, so if you like the machine, and can afford to wait for the fix...

Dont hold out on us! Post that fix as soon as you get it!

Thanks a ton

I have this notebook, but not the problem :-)

I do like the machine, generally. There are a few things I dont like about the laptop:

- I bought the M6842N (4:3 version), the graphics card draws artifacts as it gets hotter. After a little while the screen becomes garbage.
- The screen had that "gradient" problem, its because the viewing angle is very limited so the screen looks different from every angle.
- Sent it back, got a M6742N (Widescreen) version, it has the same screen, but the problem isnt apparent because its much shorter.
- The hard drive makes a loud click noise when seeking, the cd drive head makes a tick noise when the laptop is moved around... i suspect that most drives have this problem, but its not pleasing to hear.
- It gets quite hot on the lap and is pretty uncomfortable, which is ironic because its called a "laptop"... maybe thats why some people use the word "notebook" :P
- I received XP Home instead of Pro as advertised, I might have to send it back anyway. If I do, I might replace it for a Sony Z1XSP.
- Its a bit heavier than the 2.6kg advertised... the dvd drive is pretty much essential, so i will be lugging around 3-4kg with accessories around.

I do want to keep this laptop, but i dont think i can wait for a fix, i think its better to take advantage of my 14 day satisfaction guarantee.

Any idea on how long until the fix is avail?

Eric

I cant see how it can be fixed unless the contact pins are physically bent.

My AOpen 1557G has a similar flexing problem. However, instead of shutting itself off when picked up by a corner, the touchpad stops working and a reboot is needed to get it to work again...
