Just a heads up to those who don't like the black keyboards, a m1710 silver keyboard will fit fine.

A black keyboard works for those m1710 users who don't like the silver keyboard either.

The silver looks very cool on the 1405!

Awesome. Any idea what the part number is?

For the silver keyboard its WG328. It's hard to find anywhere else except Dell spare parts.

Awesome! How much did it cost? Does it go with E1505?

Looks like the e1405/e1505/e1705/640m/6400/M1710 use the same keyboard configuration and size, so the silver keyboard will fit any of those models. I called Dell Spare Part and they quoted $10 something, but that's with my M1710 service tag, so I'm not sure they would sell you a silver keyboard if you don't have an m1710.

Yeah I have a E1505, so maybe I will think about getting one. Thanks.

I just ordered one WG328.. it came to $10.95 + tax + shipping = around $20

I own an XPS M140... however I was just wondering how come the one which "Spinitch" has replaced looks silver... is it just me ? or are there different colors available ?

I think the original M1710s came with a more white color. Eventually they all came with the silver ones. The one in the pics you provided are the white color ones.

Did you get the keyboard yet? I'm not sure the M140 has the same keyboard connector as the newer models. I know the 9300/XPS gen 2 M170 use a different connector than the M1710/9400/640m..

ohh ok ! I just ordered it like an hour ago and I hope I receive the silver one as they look better to me !

Also, a quick search online revealed that the keyboards for Inspiron 630m / 640m / 6400 / 9400 / E1405 / E1505 / XPS M140 are all the same Dell part # NC929... SO I think the M1710 keyboard will fit too since U could fit it over ur E1405.

Any idea how long it takes for them to ship it since the Dell Spare Parts customer rep said that even though the part is in stock, it could ship it out any time before March 15...kinda wierd, ain't it ??

That's good to know the M140 has the same connector. I guess that makes the M140 and 630M to use the same connectors as the dual core laptops.

Dell spare parts gave me an overnight shipment since I told them I was replacing my m1710 keyboard, so they might take longer if you just want to order it yourself without a xps service tag.

Did you have to convince them to ship you a m1710 keyboard without a service tag for it?
Yes, M140 is the XPS and 630M is the Business side machine! I have even tried replacing my M140 keyboard with E1505 adn it has worked flawlessly !

The rep asked me for a Service Tag but I just said that I have the part number instead and she just placed an order without any hesitance !

Registered service tags get overnite shipping for parts of the SAME registered system! My registered service tag is for M140 and thats why the Dell Chat Rep asked me to call the Dell Spare Parts to order M1710 part..

She gave me a couple options to choose from; overnight ($16) and 3-5 day ($8) shipping and I opted for the 3-5 day shipping..

I hope I get it soon...

Also, since we are talking about keyboards here, do you know if there is a way to incorporate the D610 / D620 / D820 keyboards since I am very inclined towards the pointer mouse in the center of the keyboard (like th IBM's)...

How come none of the online stores (including Ebay) have the M1710 keyboards.. thats kind of strange !

Any light on that !

There is an ebay merchant that sells them, but at $45 shipped. Since they are technically only for m1710, there doesn't seem to be a huge supply of them.

I doubt you can get the latitude keyboard to work, the physical difference would hinder any type of mod. If you can overcome that, then you might have a chance. I would guess the keyboard only requires a driver so the windows can recognize the center pointer on the keyboard, unless the BIOS handles that.
