I scoff at the P-M 4 hour battery.

New gadget out (maybe not new to everyone) called the Valence N-Charge. Plugs into your mobile computer and adds an additional 10 hours to your computing time. It works like this: The Valence external battery is drained first, then the computer's onboard battery kicks in. Conversely, when batteries need recharging the notebook's battery takes the first charge then the N-Charge battery recharges.
It does weigh just under 3 lbs. which may scare off the lightweights.
I've got one on order myself.
Now I can legitimately tell the P-M disciples that battery life just don't figure in the P4-PM argument anymore!!

If you plug a P-M to one of those, the P-M will still get a lot more battery life than a P4. If a P4 can get an extra 10 hours out of one of those, then expect a P-M to get an additional 15-20 hours. Besides, P-M users still dont have to wear mittens to use their notebooks.

" wear mittens " - Do you mean "Oven gloves"?
Yeah. Oven gloves would be good too, but I copied the "mittens" reference from the last thread where we gave dashby a run for his money. Some guy posted something about mittens and I thought it would be a good way to tie the two threads together in a way

HERE is the previous thread that I mentioned.

LOL!!! What is your problem with PM notebooks Dashby? Just cuz you don't have one doesn't mean you have to continually bash them. I think the overwhelming amount of evidence shows that a PM is a much better fit overall for a notebook processor. Obviously you don't agree. Fine for you. Keep your P4. It is a nice fast processor, but has some serious drawbacks when used in a notebook (heat, battery life). I considered all options before I ordered my nc8000. When the whole picture of what my notebook needs are laid out, a PM centrino was the winner hands down over a P4 for me. That does not have to be the case for everyone. But as enderet mentioned - a PM with your 3 pound external battery will still get 3 times as much battery life as a P4 with the external battery. So you point is moot.

All I'm suggesting is the biggest argument in defense of the P-M has been battery life. Well, if you can use a P4 which most P-M folks have admitted is at least somewhat faster (and I'm saying a year from now there will be software that will stifle the P-M..and the P4 will keep on ticking thanks to the inherent HT technology) and get 10 hours battery life...bring on the next argument.

Yeah, with the P-M you might get 12 hours but who is really going to sit on a computer for 10 hours, much less 12? If it's a P4 you'll only sit on it for a few minutes 'cause it will burn yer ass my friends.

amd 64 anyone, better battery life then the p4 and comes pretty close to beating the pm battery under very intensive programs like heavy gaming. Also it supports 64 bit, and comes damn close to beating the p4 in performance, and will probably beat it with a 64 bit os running. and is reasonably cool........ now lets all get along children

Battery life by itself is not a very important factor. It is possible for a notebook to be built with a 10lb battery and outscore all notebooks out there. The important factor is the battery life : Weight ratio. It is always possible to extend battery life by using larger and larger battery. Harder is it to extend battery life using the same sized battery. The latter is obviously more desirable.

Where do you get said gadget? That is pretty neat! That means I don't have to charge my battery every 4 hours. This can really come in handy especially when you live in the country!

Type Valence n-charge into your favorite search engine...and wallah. Actually there are a lot of places carrying it. I'm getting mine from PC Universe. It is a very worthwhile investment. The reviews all say it's better than sliced bread. I read about it first in NetworkWorld..they don't usually endorse to many gadgets, but they liked the n-charge.

The problem with portable external batteries like the N-Charge by Valence is that they are still external. The notebook is still not attached to the battery and when it comes to moving around with the notebook you have to carry the external battery around too (can cause a lot of problems). I rather carry a 8 pound notebook with 7 hours of internal battery life than carry a 8 pound notebook with 10 hours of external battery life.

Dashby, how did you verify that the n-charge would work with your G1. I've been looking for an external battery,( even posted a question in the ABS forums) but have not found one that has an end that works with the G1. I don't normally need battery life except on air planes. If you could post your n-charge #, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
I'd be really surprised if your G1 will last 10 hours on the N-Charge.
Do the math, the G1 sucks down at least 75 to 80 watts when driving hard. The top N-Charge has a capacity of 10 AH at 20 VDC (though it doesn't specify lets use the 20 volt setting), that works out to 200 watt hours maximum capacity. Divide that by the G1's draw, 200/80 = 2.5 hours. The standard battery is rated at 63 watt hours, so you are looking at about 3 times its life.

Not that that's not a good thing, but its not 10 hours nor even close.

Ummm. big hole in your argument dashby-

My PM Will last 4 hours or so, at 6.5 pounds. Its a heavy P-=M, no doubt. But, it still only weighs 6.5 pounds.

You have a monster of a laptop, maybe a sager (guess) at around 10 pounds plus. You are advocating adding 3 more pounds. Thats 13.

Yeah, you get more battery life, and your chiropracter gets to make more money off you! Its a win-win really, unless you DONT like having a slipped disc!

Eric

PS- This post has been made in the sense of lighthearted fun. I have no personal grudge against anyone here. There is SOME sarcasm within the contents of this post. Should you not be able to discern the humor within, I suggest going to google at the link below.

Thank you.

Why is there even an "argument"?

Some people want mobile and others want desktop replacements. Am I missing something?
Everything in between and beyond on both ends, not to mention those solutions at right angles to the argument, sort of the "Z" band. Not to mention any other ranges possible in other geometries.
Dashby just can't let the dead sleep. If you notice, he is constantly trying to justify his notebook. Such is the sign of immaturity. Is anyone else here tired of hearing the same argument being brought up again and again?

Just get whatever notebook you want, plain and simple. Didn't like what you got? Tough deal, my friend.

That's a very good point! But, don't any of you geeks work out?

To quote what went thru the mind of the bowl of petunias as it hurtled towards the planet Magrathea just after being forced into existence by the Heart of Gold's Infinite Improbability Drive:

I think we should award the "LEAST USED BUTTON ON THE FORUM" award to those who don't do a search for this topic. It gets rehashed at least once a month. Wait - is that a full moon I see...
