Vista Upgrade on Gateway Laptop

Thread Starter
DenB and I had been in extensive conversation about the Vista Upgrade Program on our laptops under another topic. I decided to start fresh in a new thread to see if anyone else is experiencing craziness as well. My first email was on the 16th and to date we've exhanged 12 times with the last one telling me that my COA is invalid and to contact my vender for further assistance with this. Keep in mind, most of the prior emails told me when to expect arrival of the CD, how to go to the website and order it, and even going further to state my validation was complete (no COA nor serial # was sent by me nor was it requested but one other time near te end of this mess). They've never stated receipt of my mail-in requirements which were, in fact, sent in December.

I'm kinda of bothered by the last email and will definitely pursue it further. Anyone one else catching woes for this free OS???

so i guess just some small messing by Lady Di part from Gateway - keep pounding them I guess, most (all) laptop sellers/manufacturers r being overwhelming at the moment on vista

side note: u both realize then that once u UPGRADE, u will lose ur current XP licence key. On the same breath, even though i do enjoy vista at the moment, not having my backup in XP (partition) is a bit scary, namely in the apps and drivers departments under vista.

... & the cats r cute ....

cheers ...

I don't think so......last week I couldn't wait, so I bought an Upgrade Vista Home Premium DVD (actually I downloaded it via Digital River $149 US), and was offered a Upgrade or a Clean install,(I choose the Upgrade) but sadly, after a week, I had some Ram incompatiability Probelms, so, I AXED Vista and went back to MCE 2005, it installed without a hitch, and NO, I didn't loose my MCE 2005 licence, That is simply NOT TRUE, I'm running MEC 2005 right now.........Now, I'm not sure, what I upgraded to was a Retail Licence, I haven't even gotten the Gateway OEM Vista Yet, however, I did ask GW about this, and was told, "As long as you have a Backup Copy (as I do have a Norton Ghost Image) or your GW Restore DVD, you won't loose your OEM Licence for your previous OS" However, NO Downgrade is possible without doing a Clean Install of the Old OS..............so, this would indeed indicate that your old Licence is STILL Vaild..............

Well yeah qhn, it would have seemed so b/c I have been on the phone between BB human, Microsoft voice prompts, Gateway tech support human and Gateway voice prompts all the way back to Vista Redemption program voice prompts where...... a human finally was found. She took all of my info, waiting each time for it to lock up which thankfully it did not. So she gave me a confirm # and I have to fax my originally receipt with that number and wait to see what happens next. Man, I really hope all of this is worth it.

And yeah my cat is cute, isn't he?? SMILES @ DenB

DenB - thanks for the follow-up on qhn's suggestion on the possible loss of the XP license. Good one to know. Also, what site did all that info come from about your Vista upgrade? Was it that same Vista link you gave me before?? LMK. I am reading shipments expected end of Feb into early March. She told me to wait a couple weeks if I get an email stating my info was not submitted b/c like qhn said, of the overload. It's free whaddayah expect. (laughs)

PS - I am checking out Vista's Upgrade Advisor and it's not compatible with a few Gateway hardware pieces.... ugggh ohhhh.

All of the Vista Drivers for your MX6453 noteook are all up and running HERE:

http://support.gateway.com/s//Mobile...13913Rnv.shtml

I wouldn't worry too much about Vista drivers right now, untill you get your Vista DVD, that link is from the Gateway/Emachines OEM Upgrade Redemption Website HERE: https://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/vis...px?oem=Gateway
post #7 of 86
actually i m glad to hear that the UPGRADE version would not kill ur previous licence, all info up until now pointed to the losing ur previous key after u activate into the upgrade version. It is, however, the main purpose of an upgrade licence, cheap in order to move users up into the new OS, think about it as a trade.in of ur old car for a new model - one cannot keep the old car and has a new model :-)

but then, if it is ok for u, all the best - glad that it works out

cheers ...

Yeah ghn, that was my exprience, but, Vista is the least of my worries right now, did you get a change to read THIS THREAD: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread190468.html

I just don't get it, and for the life of me, why this memory upgrade went so wrong on my MX6447 Notebook, GW said it was incompatibility memory issue and that they DO NOT RECOMMEMD Kingston RAM, due to that, they told me to try another Brand of Memory............I dunno what to do now, I did return both 1GB Sticks, for a Full Refund tho? that's why I'm NOT using Vista right now, without the 2GB of RAM Vista Run like Crap on my MX6447 notebbook
post #9 of 86
hmmm, have u tried checking the current working configuration with cpu-z tool?

only thing i can think of at the moment is the voltage within the ram module

i only got 1gb ram on mine- and it runs vista like a freight train :-)

cheers ...
Yeah I did the testing on both 1GB sticks, and they came up with no errors, but when I put both of them in, all hell broke loose? each one ran fine w/ GW's 512MB stick and run fine alone in each slot, but not together.....GW's website suggest that you only use Hynix, Infieon, Qimonda and Samsung memory chips in my MX6447 Notebook, if I use anything other than the above listed type chip that, it won't work, and is listed to be incompatibale with my Motherbord: 4006133R - Blade-K8F GW UMA Single Core Motherboard w/RS485M and 1394 - Quanta (FRU)
now the problem I'm having to deal with is, where to find any of those memory chips to work w/ my exiting kingston 1GB DDR2 PC4200 533Mhz, not sure what that one is, but it will work w/ the 512MB GW's chip, any ideas on how I can find something that's compatiable with that 1GB, I may have to buy (PAIRS) just to get the 2GB to work, I hope that is not the case..................I have crappy (Shared Memory) in my MX6447, so, not really anything I can do about that problem, unless ATI comes out w/ a new driver that will work with the hypermemory featrue that comes with my MX6447, that feature works GREAT in MCE 2005, but seems to be missing in Vista for some reason, I don't know why?
it is not so much that u pair ur kingston module -

i came across this site that claims that THEIR kingston module would work with ur laptop
http://www.memorystock.com/memory/GatewayMX6447.html

we have a sticky in this forum about ram upgrade et al .. worth a browse (ram voltage, speed ...)

as mentioned above, use cpu-z to read ur modules, and it could be that the kingston u have is not really compatible with the board, when runing on its own - can always sell it and get a pair that works from memorystock.com

cheers ...
Yes that is what I was thinking too, so, it looks like buying the 1GB sticks in (PAIRS) is the way to go, Thanks for the website ghn............at this point, it doesn't make much since to try and find a match for that 1GB Kingston DDR2, it will be a Real Crap-Shoot trying to find anything Compatiable with it, and a waste of time as well...........Thanks for your help!

have a great day,

I am back to give you details thru all the phone calls that I was too tired to do earlier. DenB as you know this lappy is on exchange. So of course I was wondering if it would even be allowed for the Vista upgrade program. When I picked it up, the rebate prgram printed out as welll. But on the bottom of the "exchange' receipt, it reads like it's not eligiable. Onwards, BB or Geek Girl, said if there was no notation on said receipts then there should be no reason it would not go thru. We shall see.... I mean how many lemon policy lappy's you think BB do a year???

Next, Gateway tech support only knew that the program exists, he knew no details - literally NONE. Seriously, I had to ask what department I reached early into the call. I felt like I was calling somebody unrelated to the company at all a to how uninformed they were. Seems dialing the 408-.... number just patched me thru to TS since I was on hold 10+ mins. As I was telling him the details, someone else was apparently listening b/c he asked the person if they heard what I was saying. So he wanted to know what I had, what I was getting, why and all that jazz. I told him that plus that the Vista page via their site was taking long times to load and I never actually accessed it since Decemeber nor did I try, really. Anyhow, they seemed to have found possibly a memo on Gateway's problems with thie upgrade thingy. Their site as well as the program site too was included.

Ok, Vista people.. of course all I did was give info needed. Thru all of this she is telling me that loads of Gateway customers are facing the same issues as Gateway has not allowed them whatever accesses need to do this. She says thousands of people are having issues but did not say it it was just Gateway owners or not. Also, it was not as simple as just sending in that mail-in stuff. I was supposed to go to Gateway's site AND register as well. Maybe I failed to read/understand b/c of my lappy's situation. Work with me here...(laughs)

Finally... (Geek Squad or BB peeps told em this) I was so wrong in thinking that thiis program where the upgrade info is sent sends the upgrade CD to you. NOOOOOT. You get some certificate or whatever in the mail AND THEN... I go back to BB to get my upgrade CD. Maybe I somehow missed all of this but I am very tired already of Vista is all I know.

DenB - I only downloaded their advisor to see what it would tell me. I printed 6 pages but only needed to save 2. Its' the task to do prior to and after the install. I hope all the drivers are still on that link you've left and more. I'm not doing anything now till CD is in hand and seriously ready for a go. I have an old version of WinZip and that possibly will not work HAH!!

Hummmm......News to me, when I 1st bought my MX6447 back in NOV 2006, after I took it home, and got it all set up,I registered it ,as I do all PC's/Notebooks I have purchased, when I bought this lappy CC told me
to make sure I go to the Vista upgrade site, so that I can get my Vista DVD when it's released, so, I did, but, couldn't get on the site untill after DEC 5th 2006, I'm not sure, what I'll get (DVD or a Certificate), who knows at this point? as for BestBuy, I never buy anything form them, as I don't like the way BB does Business and the way they Treat Paying Customer, so I suppose, I'll just have to wait and see what I will get as an Upgrade, OEM, Retail Certificate? whatever, as for losing Winzip, did you know that it's a built-in feature of XP? so, not to worry, Vista also has it too...............smile, and YES I do like your Cat

WOOOOW, am I really getting tired now DenB...

Thanks for that "rough start" link. I don't really feel like adding to the woes there but we'll keep this link updated as time goes on. If anybody needs a phone #, I have a different one than what's listed on that page.

On WinZip... oooooh. (looks embarresed) I'll share with you the advisor tasks list when I get back in later today.

don't worry, all you have to do is dowload all of the Vista Updates on the Gateway website for your MX6453, all of what you listed are the incompatibiliies with all of the MEC 2005 drivers that you are currently using, so that is why it says: Go to the manufacturer's website to download the latest utilities for your system. they are listed, the Vista drivers for all of them will correct THIS, also, so will the Vista BOIS 84.05 exe. so, you will be fine, and your notebook is well equipped to run Vista, remember when you bought your MX6453? that Vista upgrade is part of what you purchased, wheather or not, you traded up you old GX7405 notebook, so, don't let them cheat you outta what's due you, keep on top of them, so that you can get your Vista update no matter what BB tells you..........
