9860 Modem and sound issues Vista

Thread Starter
My 9860 is a standard set up RAID 0 and 3 Gigs of ram. When I installed vista I have 30 devices for the modem and no sound device. So I re-installed Windows XP and did not have that problem. Can anyone help me out with this? I installed Vista again without loading any 3rd party drivers and the same problem presists. Did anyone have this issue? If you did or know what I can try, Post it!

try uninstalling your modem thru device mgr and let vista find best drivers. If it happens again, uninstall and try installing modem driver off of your XP CD. As for your sound do a google for realtek HD audio vista driver and install, that should give you sound.

Well if you have one of the early 9860's your Mother Board will not work properly with the Modem/Sound. I finally got the Modem working but never got the sound to work.

Wow that is not fun at all. I have a 9860 that was fixed 3 times I have the newer motherboard. That makes me very upset that microsoft and sager do not care to resolve this issue. I have tried many, many ways to get this issue fixed and am still stuck. 30+ unknown devices for the modem and no sound is not the way I want my laptop to work. Guess I will keep looking for updates from microsoft. Also because my modem does not work with any driver, I am unable to set up my blue tooth because the upgrade will not work. I am a sad panda.
Motherboard version 4.5A

I have mobo version 1.4A and have experienced the same issue. I'm not sure exactly what mobo version it was fixed on, but I know that 9880+ owners don't have the same problem. In fact there is a 9860 owner in this thread: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread189620.html that claims to have gotten sound to work at least in RC1. I haven't gotten around yet to trying a new Vista install on my machine so I can verify if dm3d's solution will work on my 9860; maybe it will work for you...

I had an old Indigo Echo PCMCIA card and tried it since they posted Vista drivers. The Indigo Echo did not work but I tried installing the Modem Drivers (with the Echo plugged in) I linked above and now the modem works on every boot.

Interesting. I have an Audigy 2 ZS for which there are Vista drivers that with the last version I tried, did not work either. Interestingly enough, with RC1 (or maybe it was beta 2?) and the very first Creative Vista driver I tried, I got at least basic sound from the 2 ZS, not so anymore... Several new options to try out now including your method (using my 2 ZS) for when I get around to trying Vista out agian. TYVM.

Still no dice. 30 unknown modem devices in device manger and no driver I have tried works yet. Do not know what I can do now, guess I will go back to XP soon if there is no resolution to my issue. GG Vista.

I just wanted you to know my problem is almost identical with yours, only 39 unknown devices instead of 30. The Geek squad at Best Buy tried to find a Realtek HD audio driver and modem driver to no avail. There conclusion was that the audio won't work because the Smart Link 56K modem is on the same bus and so far has no Vista support. My notebook is a Sager 9860 ugraded to 9890, two 80 GB drives in RAID 0 config.

Same problem here, have tried dozens of sound drivers to no avail. Vista doesn't even detect a sound card. I have about 30 modems though! I also have had my motherboard upgraded due to bad video card, had to upgrade MB in order for new NVidea 7800 video card to work. Noticed that although sound works in WinXP, it is not quite right. When doing a speaker test using Realtek Sound Effect, I no longer get sound but on the two back channels. I assumed I had sound card problems...know I don't know for sure. One more thing, SiSoftware Sandra in WinXP reports that my onboard sound adaptor is disabled, even though I have sound.

Hd Audio / Smart Link Modem Problem

I don't know if anybody else has discovered this, but if you go down to the system area of the device driver and uninstall the HD bus driver, all the unknown (modem) devices disappear. When you reboot, the HD bus driver reinstalls causing the 30 some odd unknown devices to return. A couple of times I tried installing the XP driver from the Sager support website. I got the proper device name in device manager, but multiple instances until the computer blue screened. Had to boot using F8 and last known good configuration.

I had the same problems and resolved them by removing the Smart Link modem. It's all detailed over here:

No more 39 unknown devices, I have sound, all is well. You can thank Conexant for the headache.

Does it say "MAx20" in white letters on one side ?

The postage-sized card that, upon removal, restored audio to my machine? No, no mention of "MAx20" anywhere on the card itself, or the black 'wrapper'. Model: MDCAZS P/N: 88-D90T1-391 S/N: XXXXXXXXXXX (11 numbers) Billington Systems, Inc. 811300371 That's everything that was printed on the 'wrapper' with a barcode. It was the only postage-sized card mounted on that area of the motherboard with a pair of wires going to it though. Are you facing a no sound/39 unknown devices issue?

Yes with Vista (and every Linux distro made since 2006), but I don't want to take it apart so was hoping maybe it was close to being under the Keyboard. I will just stick with XP as the life cycle of this laptop could be reaching the end.

As memory serves, it is indeed right under the keyboard, and the silver tray beneath that. It would be (roughly) under your 12QW keys, and would have that pair of black and white wires heading towards the rear of the machine. It was the only type of 'add-on' card mounted in this area of the motherboard, so it was pretty easy to distinguish. Agreed about the life cycle issue. I actually took mine apart just to see if there was any hope of strengthening/restoring the connection between my AC jack and the motherboard, but there doesn't seem to be any. While I was in, I spied that card, guessed what it was, and tore the little bastard off. I was happy to have sound, but it's only a matter of time before this machine is completely dead because of the power issue. Alienware is willing to take the machine for 2-3 weeks and install a new motherboard for me for a prohibitively expensive price -- so looks like I'll get every last mile out of this box while I can, and buy something new. I keep reading about the new Acer Aspire 9920 and drooling, but fear the sticker shock when the price is announced. No idea yet what I'll get, but want something built around Santa Rosa, DirectX10, and the 8600M GT.

Thanks. I have much better idea if I go looking for it.
