9880 to 9890 upgrade question; refurb or upgrade?

Hi All,

I was plagued with a dead motherboard and video card in my np9880 last week. I read about this problem here and prayed it wasn't happening to me up it finally totally died on me. I sent it in and got very quick out of warranty service from Sager. I have two options before me... Refurbish for $700 and get a refurb Mobo and a refurb 6800ultra video card... or upgrade for around $1130 and get a 9890 Mobo and a Nvidia 7950 512mb video card and a new power brick...

My questions are.... if I refurb... could this defect just happen all over again? What causes this defect? is it worth the upgrade for the new card and will I be more safe from this defect? I need to make this decision soon and email them back...

Both options are a gamble and my 9860 is not dead but, I want to increase my babys life. I have emailed sager two days in a row with out reply.
If we are going to gamble we may as well go all out.
Good luck.

IMHO if you go with the $430.00 extra upgrade you could get a whopping nice increase in capability and it is only worth the money if you: 1. Want to stay with a laptop or at least this one and 2. Are actually going to utilize the extra horses under the hood with the upgrade.

If it is a flawed design then fixing with the same stuff is only a temporary fix for the inevetible time that it fails the same way again.

Me personally since I do not need too much mobile firepower anymore I have opted to sell the 5760 I have and get a desktop thats twice as fast for that money. Laptops are a pricey way to have performace computing and needs change over time.

Good luck with your evaluation and the eventual outcome. It is never fun when our babies are sick. Take care.

Thanks for the replies,

I decided to go with the full upgrade to the 9890. from what I've read here this is probably the best way to go as the performance increase is very good and I will most likely dodge having the same problem happen to me again. I'm not sure how long I will keep this laptop but I do require dependability. my first sager was a 5750 and it was a workhorse and could take a beating. I remember spilling an entire glass of wine on it and dropping it a bunch of times. It crapped out from the wine but came back after drying out... only problem I ever had was a broken screen latch... I'm hoping this motherboard thing is just a fluke and there won't be further problems with bad parts. I just ordered a 2080 for the family to use in another room.... hopefully that will be another 5750 for me...

Mike,
Hope you got your RMA before me.
Just got email that the video card (Nvidia 7950 512mb video card) is out of stock until middle of March.

I doubt it... I got an email yesterday telling me they are out of the video cards and because of the extended chinese new year, they weren't getting a shipment from asia until somewhere around March 15th....

Mike

BTW... Just got my 2080 the other day.... very nice laptop except... Vista Sucks!! Nothing works... I think I might send it back... they have a 30 day return policy I think... it really sucks...
