inspiron 1000 - Fan stops on boot

Hi all. I've had an old waterdamaged Inspiron 1000 for about a year and a half or so, not having had the time to replace the motherboard and fix it. But my girlfriend is looking to get a laptop, and she's not a heavy user, so I thought if I could get a motherboard for this and sort it out, it would be fine and dandy.

I bought the replacement motherboard off of ebay, where the auction stated that the item had a "known power jack problem and remained untested" In the end it turns out that the power jack problem was that someone had tried to replace it and done a terrible job. As for whatever else was wrong with it, I couldn't instantly see. The graphics heatsink had one of the screw recepticles broken from the board, but I have soldered it back on, and have replaced the power jack.

Once this was done, I put everything back together, and plucked up the courage to test it. The unit powers on, and the screen is blank for 2-3 seconds, and then when the screen finally turns on, the fan turns off, and I pulled the plug.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem, what may be causing it, and whether I should look into repairin hte original motherboard.

---

the original motherboard I believe had coffee spilt on it. When I opened up the case, in the top left near the power jack was a little bit of electrical mould, but I could see no component damage. hopefully it was just superficial, but I cannot be certain. Further to this, when I turned it over, I noticed a LOT of the mould on two transistors. I'm wondering whether if I can swap out these two transistors, the original board will work?

Anyone have any advice?

Many thanks, Dai.

Does it boot to windows or do you just turn it off as soon as the fans go off?

I've been brave enough to let it run for a few seconds after the fan stops, and it doesn't get past the f2/f12 screen as it boots up. While the fan just moves air off the heatsink, I don't want to risk damaging the chip.

Also, I have tried pressing both f2 and f12 to see if it would change the screen and nothing happened.

Ok, I let it run a little longer this time, and when I pressed f12 it worked, slowly. then it redirected me to the f2 setup. After this it told me the harddrive was going to have a SMART failure soon. Press f1 to continue. It then goes through the boot screen for windows, with the little star trek bar, but when it gets to what should be the login screen, nothing. The screen goes blank. All the while, the fan for the heatsink is off, except for the couple of seconds prior to the f2/f12 screen. Does the fan make an incredible amount of difference? Or will it be ok to run for a few minutes without the fan to see if it will boot?

::EDIT::

One of my friends just told me that it is not uncommon for a fan to whirr on boot for testing, then turn off until it is needed again. Is this true?

Yes. Plus, I was going to suggest that if you were really worried about it, you could install i8kfanGUI and take direct control of the fans in Windows so you wouldn't have to worry about it...

It woudl seem the hard drive has knackered now, so fortunately one of my friends has a spare one he is sending up to me. Thanks for your help, I was unaware of this, and got very frightened!! Thank you very much!
