Versatile Gaming/Video Editing Laptop

Just want to let you know that I'm a newbie to the forum but have been a long time reader and value everyone's opinion. I'm looknig for a versatile laptop that will allow me to game (i.e. BF2, 2142, etc.) but also allow the Mrs. to to all of her video/picture editing. Also, the kids would utilize it when we travel. We are currently looking at a Toshiba P105-S9339 that's on sale at CompUSA this week for $1,950. Specs are as follows:

Intel Core 2 Duo T7200
2 GB Memory
200 GB HD (?4200rpm)
Windows Vista Ultimate
Bluetooth
DVD Burner
17" WXGA+ (Res 1440 x 900) - Truebrite Screen
Nvidia 7900GS (256 MB)

Based on these specs is there something else (i.e. Asus, Dell, Sager, etc.) that you all would recommend for our needs? What resolution screen type would you recommend? Is it more beneficial to have a higher resolution screen?

I think you'd find a 5400 rpm drive better suited for video work and gaming applications.

If you can't get the similar config with a 160gb 5400rpm drive, then I'd suggest buying an aftermarket one (here's a link to Newegg's 160gb 5400rpm Drive listing), and putting that 200gb in an external firewire or usb enclosure for offloading finished projects.

Thanks for the input. What are your thoughts on the build quality of the Toshiba versus other options? Would you recommend a higher resolution in the screen?

Just personal opinion here, but I have a Dell D600 with 1400x1050 res, and I think it's perfect... on its 14.1" LCD. On a 17" I think 1440x900 is a little shy of optimal. 1680x1050 might be perfect for you, if it's available, but 1920x1200 could be too much. It's really somehting you need to experience to know.

As far as toshiba's concerned, I'm not familiar enough with their line and history to speak to their overall build quality, but a couple people in my family have them and have been pretty happy with them. I would take that to the Toshiba forum, and see if anyone has had any issues with that particular model.
