Which AV-prog to install?

Hi, i've done a reinstall of OS and om not quite sure which anti virus program i should install on my XPS M1710, i haven't installed any AV-prog yet.
Before my reinstall of XP i used Mcafee, and i wasnt quite satisfied with the in-game performance i had. And i suspected it may have had something with Mcafee hogging alot og resourses.
However my current 3dmark06 scores remains the same as they where when i used Mcafee.

So my question is:
Which anti virus program should i install now? And i want best possible in-game performance.
Reinstall Mcafee, or install some free AV-prog like AVG, that might hog less resourses?

Please tell me what to do, as i am fairly clueless!

Between Mcafee and AVG or Avast, I think the general concensus at NBF would be to go with either of the free programs. My own choice would be AVG.

Avast has a free version that is better that some commercial packages. I've been using their "Pro" version for years and liked it so much I introduced it at work (replacing Symantec) and also have their Pro version running. It's an ultra-reliable package and doesn't eat up resources like McAfee and Norton do. I've evaluated every AV program out there and always come back to Avast as my fave.

just to throw it in there, im very happy with Eset's NOD32. About $32 a year.

AVG or Avast.

Only thing I don't like about Avast is that you have to register and get a new serial every so often. It's free, but it's just annoying.

I have heard rumors that AVG will not be free for much longer, may want to look into that.

I have Mcafee and it works fine with me. I have tried Live OneCae and Panda AV but so far Mcafee hasnt let anything go and has great performace. I dont notice it unless its scanning. Also, if you go to use Mcafee, go to their website and make an account, or login to your existing account and you will be able to download the newest Vista compatible version of all the software you paid for. You will be able to install them from your download so the old version on your CD never has to be installed.

I say go AVG, hopefully they won't shut down on us. I use both the free AVG anti-spyware and AVG anti-virus. Both are fantastic programs. I used mcafee a while back but it ended up letting my I8200 get eaten up by virus' which AVG found and removed.

from my experience, avast works better with vista, if that matters to you

I was using AntiVir Guard with XP. It was great even though it had a annoying popup when updating because it was the free version. This would interrupt games cause u had to click to close. Since installing Vista I went with Avast which is Vista compatible which the above wasn't (might be now).

Avast is a great program. It seems to update when you boot into windows and then the taskbar popup disappears by itself which is great and not annoying.

Not to digress all too much, but since this is (so far) an 'amiable' thread touching all AV software possibilities...
Can someone explain briefly just what it is that makes some of these things such HOGS? How can some of them produce terrific results and not be resource hogs?

-And which ones are "turn off-able"? I use Norton ****me-ware (I made a mistake when I bought it- don't stone me!), and my biggest gripe is that I have little or no control over when it decides to hog up some resources AND Explorer's focus. I do have the resources, so I can live with a gluttonous AV, so long as it works really well, but I want to be able to toggle it off when I go to play a game.

I would also recommend AVG. I've used it since way back when in the good ol' Windows 98 SE days, lol. When I switched from McAfee (I think it was version 4.0) which came bundled with M$ Plus! 98, and was upgraded a version or two before I said enuff, lol.

As far as the resources thing is concerned, it depends on the AV "Suite" itself, but most of the pay-for-it ones make you think you're getting a better deal by adding alot of "real-time protection" that ends up just weighing down your system with junk. I've NEVER gotten a single virus with AVG, but I'll tell ya, it's cought quite a few sneaky little bastards trying to infect my system.

I've decided to install free AVG, and it seems to be working fine. And i notice there is fewer prosesses running now, than under Mcafee. As for in-game performance, its abit to early to tell, but its looking promising. And i've got the Mcafee installation cd, so i can always go back i i want. Thanks for all the replies!
