Vista and Sleep and Laptop lid Problems

I installed Vista on my m5550 last night. I was using and everything seemed to be fine until I decided to shutdown. I wasn't sure of how to shut down but I hit the power button on the start menu. I later found out that this is the sleep button. The machine will not go into sleep mode. It just turns the monitor off and then sits there. I can't get the screen to wake up again. Sometimes however, it will go into sleep mode and then it just takes a quick press of the power button to wake it up.

Another issue I'm having is that when I close the lid and I have the settings to "Do Nothing" when I close the lid, the screens goes black and I can't get the screen to come back on.

I don't know if this is a graphics driver issue or a BIOS issue but Alienware needs to fix thia ASAP. I'm going to call them tonight and make sure that they are aware of this issue and working to implement a fix.

Anyone else having this issue?

Sleep is a common issue and it falls onto both the graphics card and Vista. I would suggest disabling sleep and just use shut down for now. I would suggest trying different video drivers. www.laptopvideo2go.com .

I don't have the 5550 rig, but there might be a F-key combination that disables/enables the screen. This might wake it up. Sometimes when my screen would not engage, so I had to open/close the lid a few times to get it to work.

I have the same problem...

m5550, running Vista Business 64-bit
nvidia go 7600 card using laptopvideo2go's 100.65 drivers released earlier this month.

I disabled sleep on all my laptop power profiles because of this issue, but I cannot close my lid at all or I'll basically have to hard restart my comp by holding the power button for like 15 seconds.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one having this issue.

Have you tried calling Tech Support for this? If so, what was their response?

I'll be calling them tonight.

no i haven't yet.

My computer also flashes black for about 1/2 a second and resets the mouse position to center about 30 seconds after i start up windows.

Funny, mine does that too...

Wow, Alienware really needs to address the video issues...

This is not an Alienware issue, it's a Vista issue. I assume from your post that you didn't have these issues with XP...?

Vista is new, and microsoft OS's have always had problems with hibernation and standy mode.

I've always disabled standby and sleep since it's been an issue with several laptops and desktops I've owned. Instead, I just set the power settings to shut off my display after a few minutes to save power, and it's always ready to go when I get back to my computer.

Yeah, but closing the lid is something that happens and even with sleep/hibernate removed, it still doesn't work correctly.

I'm going to have to agree with Koshinn on this one. This firstly has to do with being able to close the lid and then reopen it without the screen going blank. Sleep and Hibernation are problems that should be addressed after this. Whether it be Alienware's problem or Microsoft's is of no concern to me, just want it fixed.

I'm sure they're working on it, but Alienware can't fix microsoft's software issues. If things were fine with XP, but they don't work right with Vista, it's a Vista issue.

I'll send an email to Alienware about this issue to be sure they're aware of it.

I'm sure there are going to be tons of software updates over the next few months, that's why I don't upgrade to new OS's right away.

Do you know if the 2.06W BIOS will fix the sleep function or is this definately a NVidia problem?

Yeah, I disabled it a long time ago and it still has problems. We know it's a new OS, we're not complaining (too much), we're just trying to bring it to AW's (your) attention.

My mentioning of this issue is also not a complaint. It is merely a heads up for Alienware.

I called tech support on thursday about this and they had no idea that the m5550 was having this issue. The tech rep thanked me for bringing this to their attention and said they would get right on it.
