Thoughts on Toshiba P105-S9339

Thread Starter
Just want to let you know that I'm a newbie to the forum but have been a long time reader and value everyone's opinion. I'm looknig for a versatile laptop that will allow me to game (i.e. BF2, 2142, etc.) but also allow the Mrs. to to all of her video/picture editing. Also, the kids would utilize it when we travel. We are currently looking at a Toshiba P105-S9339 that's on sale at CompUSA this week for $1,950. Specs are as follows:

Intel Core 2 Duo T7200
2 GB Memory
200 GB HD (?4200rpm)
Windows Vista Ultimate
Bluetooth
DVD Burner
17" WXGA+ (Res 1440 x 900) - Truebrite Screen
Nvidia 7900GS (256 MB)

Based on these specs is there something else (i.e. Asus, Dell, Sager, etc.) that you all would recommend for our needs? How is the build quality of this Toshiba versus other offerings? What resolution screen type would you recommend? Is it more beneficial to have a higher resolution screen?

Thank you in advance for everyone's input.

P105-9339 "Ultimate Gaming Weapon" blunted by Vista.

The Toshiba p105-9339 is one I own, and if it were not for Vista it would be a stellar machine. If you want to play games like Oblivion, FEAR Combat, and WoW, the P105-9337 and 9339 have 2-second low FPS hits every 10 seconds. The same hardware under XP works fine, however. If you're into gaming, you best prepare to set up for a Dual-Boot with Vista and XP. Consider yourself warned.

The P105-S9339 is basically the same as the P105-9722 with XP Pro. Very nice machines...but 4200rpm drive is annoying. If you have a little computer knowledge and a copy of XP Pro, you can do it. Best thing would be to just pull the 200gb4200 drive with Vista on it and save it (if you need to take in for warranty service you know, you can also use it for ext storage in an enclosure). Then replace with a 5400 or 7200 drive with XP Pro. Disable the dual mode touch pad and fingerprint reader and you're in business.

Be aware, to do this from scratch you will need to format the new drive, install XP Pro, have available and install all needed Toshiba utilities and drivers for XP, etc etc. If you decide to do it, think it through and have everything you need before starting. PM me if you have questions.
