Help Tweaking my new laptop

Hey there guys. I recently bought a new Compaq C500 model: C509NR

Celeron M 1.86gh
Window Vista Home Basic
512mb ddr2 ram
80gig hd
dvd-r
wifi

I was wondering if there is anything I can do to make this system run smoother? I've already ordered another 512mb ram for it but I am looking to see if I can tweak my laptop to make it run better.

Things I've done so far.. I have stopped the HP total Care advisor from start up and that seems to speed the start up a little. I've deleted most of of the free trial software that came with the unit. So yeah, thanks for the help.

Great thanks for the input. Quick question, will this guide be okay for Windows Vista?

It will, but that is a lot of reading. It is good you updated your RAM. I would also maybe thing about getting a Dual Core processor, you might need help installing it but if you can afford it, get it. Other than that with the information you gave us it would be good 2 go.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I am not sure if I want to upgrade to duel core because of the cost factor. The reason I got the celeron M I got a really good deal. If I spent anything more than $100, that'd defeat my whole plan. haha but yea, thanks for the insights. I hope the extra ram will serve me good. I will definately read the vista article.

Any other feedback will be much appreciated.

Quick update, the 512mb of ram was installed yesterday and noticed percent of memory usage decreasing. The start up was noticible and comp shut down time was cut in half.

I haven't used the comp much but everything just seems to run a bit smoother. I guess I'm pretty satisfied for a comp that cost about $450.

also, get something to clean the registry with, like ccleaner or regseeker. clearing out the registry will help some. ram is the biggest thing you can do i think, and shutting down extraneous processes you dont need running. simply put, i think you are already on the right track as it is. might i recommend some aftermarket disk defragmenting software like diskeeper? it works better than the windows defrag utility that windows comes with.

I bought the same system, and it ran too slow. I didn't want the new features of Vista so I reformatted and went back to XP. It runs fast now but my battery life is horrible.

if processer can be upgraded, go with that first, and i hope you have 1x512 stick currently, other wise yer stuck with 1x512 1x256 and another 256 doing nothing
