hey so ive had my dell xps m1710 since april 2006. just recently my sound has been really annoying. on music, games, movies, anything. on speakers, headphones, anything.
My sound is crackly and skippy and jumpy and it just like constantly cracking i dont know how to describe it. but its a reallll pain. i cant listen to music without this annoying cracking, cutting out in my sound.
is the problem my sound card?? my driver version is 5.10 and its called SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC. when i click update driver it says there's no better match for my driver or whatever.
can anyone help me out? is there some driver somewhere i need to download or is my sound card gonna need fixing/changing

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

I got my XPS M1210 last summer, and I think that I have solved my sound problem, which sounds like it was the same thing you two were dealing with.

My system came with the Creative Audigy Soundblaster software, which apparently conflicted with the Windows sound management setup. So, here's what I did, and the problem has not come back for a week (I'm hopeful it never comes back at all )

Go to Start, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices. Under the Volume tab, find Speaker Settings, and click the Advanced button. Click on the Performance tab. In the Audio Playback section, use the slider to set Hardware Acceleration to Basic (I don't think you can set it any lower - I tried).

This worked for me. Since this is an older thread, maybe you both found solutions already. If you did, let me know what you tried. Dell wanted me to reinstall Windows XP.

Hi qhn, Sorry, I found that post using Google and didn't notice that there were any previous posts. What I did was unistalled the sound driver. Reinstalled the original driver from Dell (I think windows update had 'updated' it). This didn't improve the situation. Then I noticed that the noise artifacts appeared to be roughly regular and I noticed it was in time with the pulsing lights in the chassis. Normally I have these turned off to save power but they always come on with Itunes (which is in one of the settings which doesn't always successfully turn off). I managed to force it not to turn them on and after a reboot no more dodgy sound. So there must be some electrical interference from the lights (not sure if you just have them on static if it still presents the same problem). Note I still have my hardware acceleration set on high. Hope that helps anyone else with the same issue!

welll its two years later and i still havnt solved the problem. tried playing with my LEDs and quicket and itunes with that annoying thing where it turns the leds back on. ive reinstalled my sound driver and got rid of the audigy thing and lowering the hardware acceleration on audio. one thing i have discovered is that this issue only happens now with games and no other programs/software (most recently americas army 3 which is why im bringing this back up) it also happens when i play IL2 but if i go into the options menu and simply disable and reenable sound the fuzzy audio stops. unfortunatly i cant seem to do this in aa3 or dawn of war which this sound issue also happens in. does it come out of your guys left speaker too?

This problem is common related to SigmaTel chip. One mainboard engineer was trying to solve it and it was unsuccessful. Saying there's no actual way to avoid when using wireless.

However this problem was much serious when i use Vista and audio driver. While i upgrade to Windows 7 i don't install the audio driver and seems to be less then before.

I find it the driver is annoying and is better without it. Since Vista and Win7 able to use audio device without actual driver installed.

It seems logical that if teh "ccrackly sound" comes when the lights are flashing, that there must be some sort of a short somewhere, or emi or rfi interference. I wonder if physically disconnecting the bluetooth and/or wifi card and rebooting would change anything??? Just a thought, could be way off, but, IF there is a correlation between the lights and the crackly, then soemthing should be able to be tracked down. JMHO

Without using those cards should have less interruptions. Since they sharing the same IRQ or bridge and may cause the inteferance. I say go ahead try it out. I personally recommend not to have the audio driver installed if you use Vista or Win7.

Best to get laptop with Realtek chip. Haven't experienced anything that bad then SigmaTel. But as far i know SigmaTel chips is now widely used for some reason. I research this somewhere on Janurary 2009 and i can't remember now.
