Killed my 5680 Bios, how to reset...or am i out of luck

Well i was reading some posts on here and downloaded the new bios I saw for the 5680, when i tryed to flash it i had a few problems and when it finally flashed it said it was loaded for a second and then the computer just shut off. the computer will not turn on, lights do not come on when i plug it in, it is completely dead. is there a way I can reset the bios (if that is the problem) or am i going to have to send this thing in for repair?

1 thing you can try is removing the cmos battery to reset everything,,, but other than that you're looking at getting a new laptop

NO! You can get a new chip that has the correct version of the BIOS. Don't think that a new machine is needed. Call you reseller and ask them for assistance on this. You might have to send the unit in so that they can "Fix" what you did.

I think you should try whatever you can on your own before you send it in. Ask Sager for a BIOS chip with the latest BIOS loaded. I think this is difficult because they get one chip PER motherboard if I am not mistaken but there are always dead motherboards (controller failure, video card failure) from which they might be able to salvage a BIOS chip and flash it for you...

Try your luck before you send it in because I fear that if you DO send it in they may plonk in some phony charges...not saying they will...but I would

There's also places on the internet that can come up with BIOS chips for anything! Just type in CMOS or BIOS at the Google prompt.

If you have the skills and the balls you can try to do a hot flash on the dead bios. It requires the followng:

1. Removing the bios chip from the dead pc.
2. Finding a desktop that has the same bios chipset as your Sager.
3. Booting the desktop up to a C: prompt.
4. Inserting the dead chip in the hot machine
5. Reflashing the dead chip.
6. Taking the bios out of the hot machine and putting it back in the Sager

Before you begin make shure that on the desktop your turn OFF the updade ESCD option on your desktop bios and change the desktop boot sequence to your A drive.

my friend is buying the same laptop I have, i might have to try doing that, or sending it back to sager if nessicary...

Well the bad news for you is (depending on your Clevo/Sager model and in case it's a really new 5680 model...) that AFAIK it's BIOS chip is mostly not socket in the latests units (seems Clevo is trying to save some money here...). So if the BIOS chip isn't socket on your Sagers mobo it's a painful job to disassemble the whole notebook, unwire the chip, flash it and afterwards wire it back in and assemble the whole unit again etc.

However, you will be more on the lucky side if your BIOS chip is socket.

Most desktops have a jumper for restoring the BIOS to its original state. Maybe notebook motherboards have the same jumper and you can reset the BIOS that way?

It's not that his BIOS settings are wrong (which is what such a jumper would correct); it's that the BIOS image stored on the EEPROM is now corrupt.

yeah I e-mailed sager and it sounds like i'll have to send it in to get repaired
