question about batterys

ok here it is my friends keep telling me that if i leave my battery in while im running it on the mains it will reduce battery life i was wondering if this was true as when i open up dell battery metre it says that it is idle. i have a dell inspiron 6400 running windows vista.

any help would be much appreciated.

No its not true. Your power supply, once the battery is charged will only power the computer, thus the battery is in "idle".
