Upgrade Inspiron 9300 with E1705 components?

Thread Starter
I have a Dell Inspiron 9300. I noticed that the casing looks identical to the newer E1705...so my question is...would I be able to swap out the motherboard and CPU for a new E1705 motherboard with Core 2 Duo CPU? Would my Nvidia Go 6800 256mb work with the new motherboard? Thanks

You probably could do that but it wouldn't be worth the money, you'd be better off selling what you have and buying a new E1705 all together. And though they look the same there's little differences as well.

And no, the 6800 won't work for the same reason you can't put a 6800 in a E1705, it's a different chipset.

That's incorrect. It does work, but requires some physical modification of the motherboard in order to fit. It is the other way around, vid cards from the 1705 are not backwards compatible with the 9300.

Maybe a stupid question: As I read on Wiki the Core 2 Duo has also an sockel 479 an the Merom T5300 and T5500 should fit. Is 37W instead of 27W the Problem, or the Layout?

9300 and 9400 are more different then you think. Memory wise, both can use the same type(533) both 9400 has a faster FSB(633) so performance is up to what you want to use your laptop for. 9300 is centrino-m and 9400 is centrino dual core, which is not interchangeble cuz of the chipsets that support either cpu. They may have similar pin layout but both will not work with each other. Video is tricky, I heard you can but I'm not sure myself. The housing for the motherboard will be the big problem(9300=pcmica vs 9400=express card) if you damage the board placing it in.

The Motherboard, Palmrest, and bottom shell are different on the E1705. I even think the LCD hinges are different. (don't really think so though). You're better off selling the 9300 and buying an E1705/9400.

I would agree with MrEvil...
