If you look at this page:
ftp://www.synapsenow.com/documents/

you can find the service manual -- it's called S.G_AS3000_3500_5000_BOOK.pdf

I found this info on the Acer peer-to-peer support forum of this site.

Well, that's a bummer. Just keep taking screws out - it'll eventually come out. :-)

okay... i'll try it again tonight
i think i'll follow the flowchart

the only thing i afraid is...
if i take out more and more screw, i can't re-assembly it back again
and it'll end up to the the trash bin

Don't trash it - just send it to me! :-)

Seriously, just go slowly. Take pics with a digital camera, too, so you can see how it goes back together. And my service manual claims to have a chart of screw sizes in the back (but I haven't looked for it yet).

geezus, it's under the keyboard already. More than likely there is one screw towards the ass end of the drive that is holding it in. Then it will just slide right out.

Fety is right.

3 screws behind hinges
remove middle cover above KB
2 screws along top of KB
fold KB back
1 screws holding drive in, appears in hole thru upper case.

slide out drive.

You saved my day ... with the info on removing the ODD. Thank you very much for this. So now that I have an operational ODD, now I can't get it to run more than a few minutes ... it just shuts down. ?? Any ideas ?? Fan seems to work fine ... but maybe the thermo sensor is wacky ?? System board ?? Hope NOT.

You mean it shuts down whilst running on CD? or is it just in general. cheers ...

Yes, it shuts down after loading all the drivers from the XP install disk, no post codes, infact, no beeps at all. Thanks for the query.

Let us see, if the notebook is more than 1 year old, we can try first to take it apart and clean it up (new thermal paste). Then we can try swap out the ram modules and test again.

cheers ...
Thank you very much GHN I will do as you suggest and report back. May not happen today ... Thank you.
YO ghn, I took it apart, thanks in significant part, to MichelleG. I found evidence of "newer" thermal paste on the cpu and signs of beaucoup heat. I am replacing the cpu with one that "should" fit. It is another 754M socket processors with the same specs. EXCEPT that it only draws 1.2v rather than 1.35v and the TDP is 25W rather than 35W. I am hoping to get away with this. I'll let you know. I wonder now about what you said about the RAM ??? Kinda lost that thought along the way. Well, if this doesn't do it .. I will definitely do some RAM.
That is a good drop from the TDP - you should be able to feel it cooler and quieter

cheers ...
