Vista 160 gig hard drive and raid

I just installed Vista and everything went great until I removed one of my 100gig drives (the second one) and put in a 160 GB. I cannot see the 160 unless I put it in a 2-1/2 " enclosure USB and there is no problem. I assume there is a limit to the raid drivers of some sort. Does anyone know anything I can do to use the 100 and the 160. I do not use raid, the dip switches are both down for ATA.

Jim, I'm assuming that you changed from your previous raid setup to a non-raid with the implementation of VISTA - Is that correct?

Are you saying that you have the original 60GB as the primary drive and then are trying to add either another 100GB or 160GB drive -or- do you have a 100GB as the primary drive and trying to use either another 100GB or 160GB drive as secondary?

Does the OS recoginze the secondary drive "at all"? Either the 100GB or the 160GB?

Do you have the drives jumpered as the manual describes (I think it was Cable Select for two drives)? I know from past experience that this does make a difference.

Finally - was an operating system every placed on either of these drives?

Actually I originally had two 60 gig drives no RAID then went to two 100 no raid all using XP. This weekend I installed windows vista on drive 1 (100gig) and installed a new 160 gig on drive two. Vista does not see the the 160 at all. I checked the drive by putting in a 2-1/2" encloser and it worked fine. Later I partined it and formated it in the USB container. I still cannot see it in windows vista.

An added piece of info: If I put in my old 60 gig disk with xp on it in drive one, I can see the 160 gig drive in XP as D drive.

Maybe Vista is seeing it as a RAID device regardless of your intentions. The controler for this laptop is marked as requiring an upgrade for Vista.

I am getting out of my techinacal abilities here, but maybe you can help. I have tried to e-mail promise for information but they have not responded. I believe that the bios of the controler is not seeing more than 137gb. It shows up with spinrite to be larger than bios is reporting. I believe I have downloaded drivers from the promice site to update the controler bios and windows drivers, but I do not know how to flash the controler card and thier is no explanion on the promise site. Can you give any advice to me?

Just a quick update. Sager called me back and their is not update for the promise RAID controller so no more than 120GB hard drives. Promise refers me to OEM/Sager for support. I took back the 160GB drive and purchased a 120GB and I can see it in windows XP but not in Vista. I can see the 100gb and one of the old 60s, but not the 120. Vista even could not see the 120 hooked up to a 2-1/2" enclosure. I had to partition and format with XP. A question I have at this time is why do I have to put jumpers for cable select. I have never had a jumper on cable select for 2 60's, or the one 100gb. Do I really need one and why?

You need the jumpers so that the computer does not become "confused".
