Just ordered from PCtorque

I ordered a 5760 2.33g/ 2g ram/ nvidia 7950 last night and I'm getting bad vibes from pctorque.
First, the confirmation email was blank. (all I got was the grey and red pctorque backround) Then calling the sales support # and getting his voicemail box, I got the feeling that this is just some guy in Long Island who runs this company by himself and spends about 3 hours a week on it when he's not commuting to NYC for his REAL job as an accountant.
Please tell me I'm overreacting.

I've found no negative comments on this forum about Powernotebooks.com ... i could be wrong, maybe i didn't search long and hard enough ... but they've been great to me!

Well, I finally got the system today. No problems. Great machine. Sorry I doubted PCTorque.
Nyako, thanks for the technical tip you gave me a week back about changing ownership.

Did the ownership thing work then?

A little disappointed in performance, though. Not much better than my 7700. In Quake 4, my fps still drops down to 30 at times in ultra mode, 1680x1050 without any AA enabled. And Prey still brings the system to its knees on MEDIUM quality native res without anything else enabled.

Call me crazy, but I'm only experiencing like 5 fps improvement across the board going from a 3.2 P4, 256mb 7800gtx to a 2.33 C2D, 512mb 7950gtx!

What was the specs on the old 7700 ?

quake 4 is optomized for multi core CPUs, you should get better frame rates than that

if this happens in all your games, you might want to re-install your drivers (or get updated ones) If that doesn't work there might be a hardware problem

what are you getting for your 3dmark scores?

Okay, I have come to the conclusion that my lack of performance is due to my reliance on vertical sync. I really, really hate screen tearing, and I thought my new computer can handle all the bells and whisles WITH vertical sync enabled. Apparently this is not the case. Maybe in a year, I will be able to purchase a laptop that can handle Doom 3, at native res, ultra settings, more than 2x aa AND vertical sync enabled.

Plus, I really hope NVIDIA comes out with some new OFFICIAL windows xp drivers for my card soon. The last one is almost a year old. Please, Nvidia, take your attention away from Vista for 2 seconds and try to appease the XP crowd just once more before we fade and ride off into the sunset.

I would like to add that I'm glad I left the Alienware community (at least temporarily) and went Sager.
I was tired of AW offering unreasonable options: ie. either 1920x1200 or 1440x900 as a resolution for a 17" screen, when one is way too small and one is way too large. "If you want our signature AlienHead, you'll buy our stuff no matter what!"

the screen refresh rate on this laptop is 25ms, yeah.... so you can probably expect some tearing

i've only noticed it on titan quest, i didn't notice it in quake 4(though i might have been a bit entrenched in the gameplay so I might not have noticed it)

there are drivers that are less than one year old

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=11557

I think those are the latest (10/5/06), you might want to double check the forum just to make sure

i'd rather have nvidia working on the Vista drivers for the 88 series, they're pretty much in the alpha stage right now

Are you serious? 25ms? The NV control panel says 60hertz. What gives?

The refresh rate is probably 60hz. The Response Time is 25ms. Response Time is responsible for things like ghosting and bluring during quick movements on the screen. The Response Time can be a bit deceiving... My laptop's 25ms lcd has a better response than my 18ms flat panel.

Just to clear the air on a few things... Response time isn't what produces screen tearing. High response times produce ghosting, trailing, and other LSD-esque effects. Screen tearing occurs when two frames are being drawn on screen simultaneously. This occurs whenever your frame rate exceeds half of a progressive scan display's refresh rate. V-sync will eliminate that by timing frame delivery to match the display. V-sync = 30fps on a laptop screen. Anything above that produces the opportunity to perceive screen tearing (it WILL occur, but not always perceptibly so). Also, regarding drivers and optimization... If you are running XP, you might try the multi-core hotfix as well as laptopvideo2go drivers. I'm running 91.63 on a similar machine (T7400 instead of a T7600) and it totally hussles. Don't forget to hit FN + F2 to kick your fans into overdrive while you play. Yes it's louder, but it's also cooler too. Heat can not only cause GPU slowdowns, but also long term damage. Hope this helps you out a little!
