I don't think anything they'll do is harmful to the laptop. The only thing I know about airport security is if you have nail clippers, tell them and put it onto the bag that you can't get to when on the plain so they don't think you'll use it as a knife, and your screwed if you have a disposable camera. The machine it goes through will ruin the pictures. But I did it and it didn't ruin them, I think for some it does ruin dem'.

I've travelled extensively with notebook computers and never had an issue. Just make sure it is turned off, and take some care when you take it out of the case to put in the tray for security. Sometimes you're rushing and it's possible to scratch it or drop it. And, the most important tip ... keep your eye on the notebook, particularly if it's an Alienware or something that might tempt a thief.

Also never had a problem with film, although my photography is all done digitally these days (never had a memory card wiped out by the x-ray).

I agree with shazza... I've taken my 766 and now my 5550 on numerous plane trips (they each went through the x-ray 10+ times a year) and nothing bad has ever happened... although the security guard person didn't believe that my bright green laptop was real and asked "what's alienware?" I'm like.. um.. it's a company. He didn't believe me until his friend came and told him about alienware and how they're "gamer" laptops. It's not like he was going to stop me, he was just curious.

I assume you're in america?

The procedure for america is... take out your laptop, put it in a separate bin (nothing else can go in it) and send it through by itself, followed or following your bags and whatever else you have.

In every other country, you can leave your laptop in your bag.

I probably go on 30+ flights a year for my job and have never had a problem with the xray machine damaging anything, my phone, laptop, usb drives, etc. I think you have to only be carefull with pictures if you are still using film as opposed to digital.

Biggest danger is dropping your machine, or turning your back and someone walking off with it.
