dvd writer

Thread Starter
Hey,

I'm in the market for a DVD burner and could use some advice. Any tips on what I should look for?

Dual-layer (is it worth the cost?)
best speed when considering cost? 4x, 8x, 16x?
Do I need to look for anything when considering specs related to -R vs +R.
External vs. Internal (I'm leaning towards external...)
What brands should I look for?
And reasonable price ranges?

Thanks,
Sam

That question is frequently asked at http://club.cdfreaks.com/ . There's also a big list of them at videohelp.com. I don't think you'll find any current ones that don't go at least 16X and do double layer. Newegg has a bunch at ~$40 for an internal, ~$80 external. I'd look to cdfreaks for a suggestion. I got a Samsung in an I/O Magic case and paid about $40 for it.

yeah, it would probably cost more to get one that isn't DL and isn't 16X, those are pretty much standard fare now. My burner is a Plextor 716A and it's been rock solid for years and has produced a LOT of fully functioning DVD's..
