battery question

hi all..
i had a general battery question- does it help the eventual life/ performance if you let the battery discharge completely before plugging it in the ext power source- especially in the early months?
my battery life did go down considerably on an older inspiron 8100- i used to connect it to the outlet as and when i felt necessary...

thanks a lot,

i found some interesting info about that

It's strange. I just purchased an IBM T41 and the documentation that came with the
machine was that partially charging a battery was not a good idea. I read someone on
this forum who said that he deep cycled (charged and fully discharged) his machine five
times when he first got it and he is getting mad crazy charge time. Then I read some info
about Lith-Ion batteries. They dont have the memory that the Nickel and lead based batts.
and therefore do not have a 'memory', therefore do not need to be "trained" like the batteries
of the old. Check out http://www.batteryuniversity.com/index.htm. Granted it is created
by a buisness person; but he says here that partial charges are better for a lith-ion batt.
(which most laptops/cell phones have) instead of full discharges. He recommends
a full cycle every 30 cycles, but cautions that the most damaging thing to a lith-ion batt.
is heat. Don't leave your laptop/battery in a hot car. I read this AS I was cycling my
laptop. It's important to know the type of battery that you have.
