Oh, how I took my good old dial-up connection for granted. Just point and click and then wait and wait and then BOOM, surfing the net at a blazing speed somewhat faster than a snail. (Hey, any connection is better than no connection!) I got my 9750 last June and after a somewhat rough beginning (a train derailment in transit to the east cost and a quick reformat because I started stuffing my little baby like a fat goose.) The box has been running really great ever since. It’s a fantastic machine and has been essential in my work and research everyday. I simply could not get things done at all without my lappy. It’s not too big and it’s certainly not too small, it’s just right.
It is now February and I am now entering the twilight of my first year of ownership. I find myself forced to dig through piles of printouts to find what kind of protection I paid for and what is covered or not.
SO HERE’S THE CLUES TO MY CASE OF THE DISSAPPEARING MODEM:
I was online one snowy night and the power block made three little clicking sounds although there was no signs of any kind of power fluctuation. I have lots of equipment and lights and tiny motors that dim/flash and rattle when there is any kind of a drop or spike so I stayed on line for a few more minutes until I finished and shut down for the night.
NOW IT GETS INTERESTING !
The next day when I went online, I got a message that my access number was no longer valid (NOT TRUE) and to use a new one. So when I changed to the new number, I got a new message that said that the modem was already in use. (ERROR 633) So I opened device manager and did not find any yellow flags anywhere. Both the modem and the port spots said that they were both working. When I queried the modem, I got a message that windows could not open the port, so I moved the modem and port to port 3, nothing, port 1, nothing, port 2, nothing. I reinstalled the modem, nothing. I reinstalled my ISP, nothing. I even reinstalled my OS, windows XP PRO, nothing. Every time I try the modem it hangs the phone line with a busy signal so I have to unplug every time to reset the line. I had to drag out my old crippled Pentium II out of mothballs so I could send this message in a bottle.
I am truly stuck, I even thought about nuking the hard drive for a moment. Is there anyone out there who has ever had modem trouble like this? Does anybody have any ideas? Is the modem separate or is it a part of the motherboard? Should I spend six hours on hold to the help desk?
Is it RESET? is it FDISK? or is it going to be RMA?
Thank you for reading this and any kind of help is greatly appreciated.
